What's new

Rajnath Singh is a new defence minister of India !

He will be bigger fag then others with no knowledge and experience of the field. Better appoint some technocrats if you care for result.
There is a purpose behind this selection.
You will get later...
May be militarily BJP led govt has some serious motive in south Asia region.

This is an unwritten rule in Indian politics. We are risking a coup handing it over to a retired general.
Sorry, but how exactly are we at risk of a coup if a retired official from the armed forces takes charge of the defence ministry ? They are not involved with setting either foreign or domestic policy, they're in the upkeep and procurement business for the forces mostly.

If a democratically elected retired or former military person is in a position to be in the cabinet, they should be handed a portfolio where they have some expertise.

In the US, for example, I think they have a 'cooling off' period for former military before they can run for office or be involved in the civilian government, which is fair enough, we should have similar rules in place.

info for Pakistanis:

A former RSS activist who was the Home Minister in Narendra Modi's first stint as Prime Minister, Rajnath Singh is popular in the BJP ranks and headed the party before Amit Shah took charge.

An amiable politician who has friends in almost all political parties, it was when he headed the Home Ministry that the government launched a major crackdown on the Maoists and other insurgents.

He gave a free hand to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take into custody several key separatist leaders in Jammu and Kashmir.

Born on July 10, 1951 into a farmer's family in then Varanasi's Babhora village, Rajnath Singh joined the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) in 1964 at age 13. He was with the RSS even when he was a lecturer in the K.B. Post Graduate College at Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh.

Singh started his political career as Organisational Secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad's (ABVP) Gorakhpur division, holding the post from 1969 to 1971.

In 1972, he became the RSS General Secretary of Mirzapur and then entered active politics in 1974. He became the District President of Jana Sangh and a key figure in the JP Movement that shook then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

He was elected as an MLA in Uttar Pradesh in 1977. He became a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1994 and the Chief Whip of the party in the Upper House.

On November 22, 1999, he was inducted into the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government as the Union Surface Transport Minister.

During this period he initiated the NHDP (National Highway Development Programme), a dream project of Vajpayee.

Rajnath Singh became the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister from 2000 and after two years served as the Agriculture Minister in Vajpayee's Cabinet between 2003 and 2004.

He was the President of the BJP before Amit Shah took charge in 2014.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Singh retained the Lucknow seat by defeating his nearest rival Poonam Sinha of the Samajwadi Party.

Good. India needs a right wing, ultra nationalist and anti Pak man like Rajnath Singh as defence minister. His policies will be rigid and tough towards Pakistan. Left wingers and liberals are weak and have no fighting spirit.

And you take solace in that? As the other Indian posters have pointed out, unwritten rules are put in place for a reason. Modi understands, we all do.

This aspect of Nehru has very much worked out right. We must continue with his vision.

Make it a real rule then, why "unwritten" ?

They have real rules for this sort of thing in the US, we should too.

C'mon, some things are better off without dissection, skeletons will come tumbling out. We cannot make that a rule as it would contravene an article of fundamental rights.

But why replace such a successful defence minister? Under her leadership IAF killed 300,0,0000,0 terrorists DEEP in Pakistani territory, DESTROYED PAF F-16 fleet with mere Migs???

So Rajnath singh is new defence minister of India.
What impacts are gonna get on defence line of India?
Indian memebers, are you guys thinking its a good decision to make Rajnath singh , a defence minister? ?
I think it's gonna boost Indian defence at double speed now.
I personally think that he is useless. But it's politics, kion keh, desh sankath main hai.

We lost valuable time not carrying through a radical well thought out rolling economic reform program during the first term. Instead a lot of political capital was used up pursuing wasteful phantom identity politics.
Ministries should be allocated to the brightest eager younger members who posses at least a modicum of experience in the workings of the ministries they intend to run.
Technocratic skills are essential as is a broad based education.
Another 5 years of Chalta heh with a saffron turban will not be enough.
India urgently needs the kind of reforms and momentum that Manmohan and Narasimha provided
Both were technocrats
