Bangkok - Thailand's cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal to seek a 400-million-dollar loan from China to upgrade state railways and endorsed ongoing talks with China to link the two countries by rail.
Both decisions would need to be approved by Parliament before further steps are taken, deputy government spokesman Supachai Jaisamut said.
If approved, Thailand would seek the loan from the Export-Import Bank of China to upgrade certain routes on the domestic rail system and purchase 50 Chinese-made diesel electric locomotives and spare parts.
The State Railways of Thailand, the state enterprise that runs the kingdom's rail system, is currently using locomotives that are more than 45 years old.
The cabinet has also endorsed the Transport Ministry's ongoing negotations with China to explore the possibility of jointly developing a new rail network between Thailand and China. China has expressed interest in building a new rail route to link its southernmost province of Yunnan with Vientiane, the capital of Laos.
Thailand has also approached China to help construct a new rail link between Nong Khai, accross the Mekong River from Vientiane, with Bangkok.
