NEW DELHi: Congress general secretary and party president Sonia Gandhi's son Rahul Gandhi has been elevated to the post of vice-president in the party on Saturday. Congress spokesperson Janardhan Dwivedi announced the decision by the party working committee to promote Rahul to the post.

It is learned that defence minister AK Antony had proposed Rahul's name for the post.

The news brought cheers in Youth Congress and NSUI members, who started to celebrate the announcement outside the conclave venue in Jaipur.

Earlier, amid talks that Rahul would be given a larger responsibility, clamour for declaring him as the Congress prime ministerial candidate grew louder at the party conclave in Jaipur on Saturday. Union ministers Jyotiraditya Scindia, Rajiv Shukla, Jitin Prasada, senior leader Manishankar Aiyar batted for larger responsibility for Rahul as the party recognised the need to respond to the demands of "new changing India peopled by a younger" generation.

JAIPUR, India - An official of India's governing Congress party says Rahul Gandhi, the scion of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, has been elevated to the party's No. 2 position as it prepares for parliamentary elections next year.

Janardhan Dwivedy, a party spokesman, says Gandhi will be party vice-president, a position behind his mother Sonia Gandhi, who is the Congress party president.

The decision was made Saturday at a meeting of the party's top policy making body in the western Indian city of Jaipur.

Party workers have been demanding Rahul Gandhi's elevation for years, but he had been shying away from holding a top position in the party.
