"Defense News": Rafael will sell the Indian Army 321 Spike launchers, 8,356 missiles, and 15 training simulators, and peripheral equipment.
24 March 11 17:53, Ran Dagoni, Washington
"Defense News" reports that the Indian Army is about to order thousands of Spike anti-tank missiles and peripheral equipoment from Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. in a $1 billion deal. Indian Ministry of Defence officials told the magazine that the order is for 321 launchers, 8,356 missiles, and 15 training simulators, and peripheral equipment.
Rafael was the only bidder in the tender, which was published in June 2010, and the Indian Army had to obtain a special permit to sign a deal on the basis of a tender with just one potential vendor. General Dynamics Corporation (NYSE: GD), Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN), Pan-European MBDA, and Russia's Rosoboronexport decided not to participate in the tender.
"Defense News" quotes sources as saying the technology transfer was the main obstacle. The magazine did not say whether the companies that stayed out of the tender refused to share their technology with India, nor is Rafael's position on the matter made clear.
"Defense News" says that the Indian Army will receive various configurations of the Spike, including ready-for-use missiles already assembled in Israel, partly assembled missiles whose final assembly will take place in India, and missiles that will be fully assembled by Bharat Dynamics Ltd., an Indian government-owned company.
The Indian Army plans to install the Spike missile systems on Russian built combat vehicles. Indian officials said that tests in battlefield conditions have been completed, and that the Spike missiles met all the specifications set by the Indian Army: a range of 2.5 kilometers in day and night conditions, and a 90% accuracy rate. The tender also stipulates that the missiles must have 3G active-passive fire-and-forget guidance systems.
On another matter, an Indian Army official said that the Arrow 2 anti-ballistic missile system, jointly built by Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. (IAI) (TASE: ARSP.B1) and Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA), might become part of India's missile defense solution. India has been mentioned as a possible customer of the Arrow missile, but any deal would require US approval, as it shares in the financing, development, production, and assembly, of the Arrow.
India is one of the largest customers of Israel's defense industry. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) says that India's is the world's largest arms buyer, because of its tense relations with China and Pakistan.

8,000 missiles may sound like a lot but only 300 launchers?? For a MILLION+ strong army? This seems very limited, not even enough for a brigade are these for infantry/veichles/ICV? . And what about the javelin wasn't this meant to be inducted in large numbers for all the army, isn't this a rival to it?? What's going on? It seems very suspicious.

We are buying 300 launchers for infantry use because the bulk of the missiles will not be used as MANPADS. Most of them will probably be mounted on modified BMPs or any other IFV. But don't worry, our infantry will not be left unattended. There are other plans in place for them, aka FGM-148 Javelin.

I don''t think this is true because IA already bought or going to buy Javelin ATGM.

It can be for 2 reasons. For one IA's requirement is huge. We need tens of thousands of ATGMs and there is no reason to use only for source for them. Secondly, while the Javelin is a great addition to our capability, it doesn't give us much beyond that in the form of TOT. But Indo-Israeli arms deals have a whole other dimension to them. Don't be too surprised if the MANPAD version of NAG bears a strong resemblence to Spike MR. ;)

our requirement is huge..and this might be reason why we are going for many ATGMs...
we need huge number in less time...which certainly can not be met by single company.

the news is bit suspicious as if it is MANPAD version then why javelin/if it is a infantry vechile carried version then we have a better missile in the arsenal called nag.Another important thing is spike is a guided missile. So why wasting money?

No dudes its not about requirements but IA rejected it after trials. Now I am sure that this is fake news.

yeah all these looks contradicting but it can be true. India really has a huge requirement. Not to mention India wanted to build most of the Javelins in India with ToT to which US might not be agreeing and hence its possible that India might go for Israel to fill some gaps and then when US agrees, we will go for Javelin. But i heard Javelin is not as good as Spike and is expensive also. India went for Javelin because of US pressure. Also most of the countries operate Spike.

. . .
where is the super duper indegenous nag?
The Indian Army has placed an order of 443 Nag missiles and 13 Namicas for introduction in the next 3 years. This super duper indigenous nag has a development cost of only 66.6 million$ and has already received orders from Tanzania, Botswana and Morocco.:chilli:

DRDL will also start working on the,`Man Portable' Nag very soon. It would weigh less than 14 kg. So to fill that gap IA is acquiring these Javelin/ Spike. It looks hot...
