RAF chiefs have been forced to borrow a French spy plane to hunt a Russian submarine hiding off the coast of Britain.
The Atlantique II long-range sea plane flew into RAF Lossiemouth two weeks ago.

RAF begs French: Find Russian sub

@mike2000 is back @Steve781 @Blue Marlin

Why on earth did you scrap the Nimrod ? :suicide:
The new SDSR will be revealed tomorrow, and there are rumours that UK could buy some maritime aircrafts, most likely from Boeing ?

Anyway,it's not a problem, the UK helped us with their C-17s in Mali,so it is normal to help them. WIN-WIN.

Well, our politicians are the biggest threat to our forces. I still don't understand how/why Cameron scrapped our nimrod which was a perfect platform for such anti submarine operations/patrols.The equipment installed aboard the aircraft was world class, but still our clueless politicians decided to scrap it altogether in other to save costs. Now they are trying to purchase even more expensive/similar aircraft from the U.S, what stupid logic. Guess they now see they made a huge blunder by scrapping our nimrod.:hitwall:

Nine Nimrod aircraft, costing £3.6 billion being destroyed

However, Cameron despite the fact that i have never been a fan of the conservatives, i still prefer him over the delusional labour leader called Corbyn, since if Corbyn was ruling this country he will scrap our entire military altogether.:undecided: lool Politicians are the one killing these country, since our military/defence giants have all it takes to make/produce any sort of world class weapons/equipment for our forces. They are only held back by clueless politicians who seem to live in another world.:disagree: Funny thing is our politicians are still deploying our forces all over the world and building yet another military base in Bahrain/middle east, meanwhile still trying to cut our defence budget/workforce and expect us to remain committed globally as we have been doing for decades, i don't know what type of logic they are using to be honest.:disagree:

they should only buy f35's only for the aircraft carriers and thats it.the f35 is useless and buy an buying 138 is like :suicide:.

Britain plans to increase the number of stealth fighter jets it can launch from aircraft carriers over the next decade and boost anti-terrorism spending by 30 percent, Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne said on Sunday.

Osborne is due to announce on Wednesday the details of spending cuts which, according to International Monetary Fund data, rank as the most aggressive austerity plan among the world's rich economies between now and 2020.

Ahead of that, the government will on Monday set out a five-year defence strategy.

"We are going to step up the aircraft carrier punch of the United Kingdom. We are going to make sure that when these aircraft carriers are available they are going to have planes that can fly from them in force," Osborne told BBC television.

"By 2023, we will be able to have 24 of these jets, some of the most powerful in the world, the F-35, on the decks of these carriers."

Those will be the first tranche of a total order of 138 of Lockheed Martin's F-35 Lightning II jets, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said. Britain had not previously confirmed how many it planned to order or a time scale, but the spokesman said the 24 marked a "substantial acceleration".

Osborne denied his overall focus on cutting public spending might hurt Britain's attempts to prevent attacks like the ones seen in Paris earlier this month, saying spending on anti-terrorism defences would be increased by 30 percent.

"We will make sure that Britain is properly defended against the terrorist threat," he said.

Britain, which said in July it would commit to NATO's defence spending pledge of 2 percent of GDP for the next five years, had reduced defence spending by about 8 percent in real terms since 2010 to help cut a record budget deficit including shrinking the size of the armed forces by around one sixth.

As part of Wednesday's spending cuts announcement, the government will tweak plans to make big savings in Britain's welfare budget after an original proposal to scale back tax credits for lower-earning households was rejected in a rare rebellion by the upper house of parliament.

Osborne said on Sunday he was willing to listen to what he described as the "perfectly legitimate concerns" of those who have argued more must be done to ease the transition period.

He also said he was still aiming to return Britain to a budget surplus by the end of the decade but declined to confirm he would stick to a target of 10 billion pounds set out in July, saying the precise level would be announced on Wednesday.

"There is nothing painful about a surplus, the pain comes if you borrow forever, if you don’t fix your national finances," he said.

Instead of wasting 3.6 Billion GBP, for 9 Nimrods which were eventually scrapped, UK could have brought 16 P8A Poseidon
As things stand now
Indian Navy has a more capable Surface fleet and Air Arm than Royal Navy

Exactly, the F-35 should be bought ONLY for our two aircraft carrier which will be mostly based in the middle east and Mediterranean sea. Buying anymore for anything else is not really necessary since we already have the potent Typhoons.
I still don't understand how Cameron could be so dumb as to scrap/destroy our Nimrod which cost us billions of pounds in R&D to build and operate. At the very least they could have sold it to gulf states or many other countries around the world who would have been more than happy to buy them, if they really wanted to save money as they claim.:disagree:

it does not work out by having 3.6 billion/9 you need to take in other factors. besides a hypothetical royal navy p8 will come with more sensitive tech then offered to typical export customers.

apparently we are getting some mq-4c tritons as an on demand mpa to complement the manned mpa's too

That's what I am saying
Instead of wasting British Tax payer money on development of 9 Nimrods, which were not even inducted, u could have just brought 9 P8A and they would have cost u just 1.8 Billion GBP

Given your close relationship with USA, and Your MOD's tight budget, You guys should try not to develop everything in house, specially when Numbers required are low

@Blue Marlin I am not fan of politicians eitheir but to be fair they live in the real world. They have to balance finite resources with infinite demands. Are you prepared to pay more taxes? Or are you prepared to slash NHS spending to buy extra toys for the military? No offense I am not and most British taxpayers are not prepared to do that either. The politicians just smell out the general feeling of electorate and policy is accordingly influenced. Most politicians know raising taxes or slashing NHS is big no no with the UK public. This is bitter reality.

The other thing you need to keep in mind is military profile is fashioned by threat assessments. Russia is primary threat with terrorism being second. All West European countries defence policy is premised on joint NATO response. So I need not fear the Russians because I know if it ever came to it UK response would be part of NATO joint attack.

Therefore looking at RAF or RN in isolation of the wider join defence structures is rather silly in this day and age. The whole point of join defence is each country has to maintain a smaller force as it is only a component in a bigger enterprise. Thus looking at British forces in islolation is rather silly I think. The request for French help is nothing extraordinary. It is the mainfestation of joint defence. On another day in another situation the French might need British help.

Smaller threats that fall outside the remit of NATO Britain is more than capable of handling.
