Mujahideen who fought against Soviets are still regarded as heroes in Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Most of them have a high status in society due to the respect and honor they are afforded.

There is nothing wrong for Gen Zia and his government defending their nation from foreign invasion. He had other problems however unrelated to the Afghan war.

Zia was simply a tool used by NATO. He was just like Erdogan and the GCC amirs are now, used by NATO in NATO's campaign against Libya and Syria.

USSR was actively threatening to truncate half of Pakistan away. They really were in a position to carry out such a move too.

I can imagine if we had a confused civilian leader like we did in the past decade how terrible of a situation it could have turned into. Zia stopped it all from going that way.
