I wish to share with my fellow Indian members ,this story about an incident that happened a few days ago in Mumbai, with one Mr. Kima from Mizoram. Mr Kima is a programmer- game developer nikalpadi have been living in mumbai for a very long time. One sunday afternoon few weeks ago, after the church service he was enjoying some fun time over a glass of nimboo-paani with fellow mizo community members. A passing police van suddenly stopped and the driver angrily shouted something at a group of mizo girls and drove off .All Mr. Kima could hear was "Nepali" and "Kathmandu". So he enquired one of the frightened girl who replied that the police asked them to go back to Nepal.Apalled by this behaviour of a policeman , he noted down the police van number and decided to do something about it..

He blogged about it and sent an open invitation for a cup of tea in a place of cop's choosing for reconcilation and to do away with all the misunderstanding that the cop had against his own countryman.

The blog was picked up and published in Firstpost website and was subsequently read by the Joint CP mumbai Mr.Date ,who even gave out his phone number and email for Mr Kima to contact.
He ordered a departmental enquiry and appointed Mr. Tamboli DCP to help with enquiry. The guilty cop was quickly identified and as per the original invitation ,was made to have a discussion with Mr.Kima and DCP Tamboli over cups of coffee.

The offending cop repeatedly apologised and stated that he didn't even know that his action would cause so much anguish. All he thought that Mr.Kima and his friends , owing to their mongoloid features, were from Nepal and had shouted “Kathmandu se aa reya la kya? (Have you come from Kathmandu?)”
Mr.Kima stated that he did not want any action to be taken against the policeman and that “We are not here to fight with anyone. We are here to make them see our side so that they feel friendly with us.”

A nice ending of the incident which otherwise could have turned into another sour experience for another north easterner . All thanks to Officers Jt CP Date , DCP Tamboli and Mr.Kima for upholding the faith and defending the idea of this nation--unity in our diversity..

That cop is lucky that these good people decided to let him go...If I was abused like this I would not have found strength to forgive him..Good work by Mr. Tamboli.

Nice Article.

Hailing for Bihar, years back ( 1990s) it was very common to be butt of joke representing poor segment in Delhi. It has reduced to a very large extent over the last two decades as Biharis are in all spehers ( police, administration, business, jobs etc) in Delhi and ,many of them have even married Jats, Punjabi etc.

Integerate, Integerate, Integerate till it stops.

Biharis are labeled as representation of two diametrically opposite grouping, Cheap Labour and IAS Officers.

I prefer the second one. I have seen hard working they are.

I have to agree. Bihari is no longer the swear word it used to be back in the 90's.
Much of it to two factors:
1. Bihari's integrated with Delhi
2. Bihar initself started giving good growth and better governance - so the image of Bihar improved.

I really feel sorry for our NE brothers who face this type of racial abuse all over India.

When will people understand that they are as much as Indians as anyone else.

But I am REALLY SORRY to say that this kind of behavior can be controlled to some extent, but cannot be completely eradicated.

India is a country of 1.2 billion people & there may be some 2-3 crore people of Yellow race (mainly from NE) in this pop., Idiots (in such a scenario) are totally unavoidable b'coz they are used to seeing the Brown/dark colored people in India so any racial difference is Alien to them.

But, I am happy to note here that the Bronze medal of Mary Kom in Olympics-2012 has helped a lot to include NE people in the Indian Mainstream, with more such International achievements coming from NE, this attitude is bound to change.

Sorry to say, some Indians do live in their own set of colonial hangover. In my college there were some idiots who thought north Indians are better than others but always failed to prove it in semester's exam:D

There are some people in NE who are equally racist to others..and in our case it is not the uneducated poor people but people who have the understanding of things and do it willfully to hurt others..

I think it's a chain reaction. A reaction to the actions of Indians from another parts.

You REAP what you SOW.

from my experience and observation , I think , people who think they are victim should :-

1) Learn from Sikhs ( they were, are and will be a butt of joke) and take jokes or racisim , whatever you call it , sportingly. Be the like a Khalsa. Be the best in whatever field thay are in and be a ruler depite being a minority.

2) Learn from Biharis..smile, toil, and keep on improving the position in society.

3) Be like many of my Muslim friend ( they joke back with friends and give it back to any ediot poking on them).

On question
what is worse, being shouted at publicly as a BIHARI or Chinki. I think even Pakistani guys used BIHARI as a derogatory term.
