ISLAMABAD: The relatives of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Aslam Jinnah and his family, arrived here on Sunday.

Chairman Pakistan Baitul Mal Zamurd Khan and a large number of people belonging to different walks of life received the Quaid’s relatives warmly at the Benazir International Airport. Aslam Jinnah, a close relative of the Quaid-i-Azam, while talking to the media at the airport, paid rich tributes to the sacrifices of former prime minister and slain PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto for the country.

“She is still alive and lives in our hearts and minds,” he remarked. He urged the Pakistani nation to come forward and play their important role for the progress and prosperity of the Islamic republic.

Aslam Jinnah said that the credit of his visit to Islamabad went to the Pakistan Baitul Mal, which had made his visit possible. Aslam Jinnah, his wife and daughter have come to the federal capital for the first time in their lives. They are likely to meet President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani during their short stay in the country.

First visit to Islamabad, maiden air travel: Warm welcome for Quaid’s family in city

* Jinnah’s great grandson Aslam says he, family travel by plane for the first time
* Says lives in a Karachi slum, makes plastic bags to earn a living

RAWALPINDI: Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s great grandson and family got warm welcome on arrival at Benazir Bhutto International Airport after their first-ever air travel.

People, especially political workers and civil society representatives, turned up in large numbers.

Bait-ul-Maal Managing Director (MD) Zumurrad Khan had invited Aslam Jinnah, who is the son of Jinnah’s niece, for the maiden visit to the federal capital along with the family.

Aslam, wife Suraya Jinnah and 20-year-old handicapped daughter Zanib Jinnah were garlanded, and showered with rose petals as they came out of the VVIP lounge. People present there shouted slogans like Pakistan Zindabad and Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad.

Local and foreign media organisations had detailed reporters for the event coverage.

Aslam told them that he was thankful to Almighty Allah for giving him a chance to see the capital of the country his great grandfather had created in 1947.

With tearful eyes, he said it’s his and family’s first-ever travel by an airplane and they had never thought of getting such a tremendous welcome at Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Airport.

He said he didn’t own a house and was leading a miserable life in a Karachi slum before the Bait-ul-Maal recently provided him and the family with basic facilities of life.

According to Aslam, his family makes plastic bags to earn a living.

He said President Asif Zardari had promised to ensure free treatment of his disabled daughter Zainab, 20, in the US.

Bait-ul-Maal Zumurrad Khan said Jinnah’s family was the state’s guest and would stay in Islamabad for a week.

According to him, Aslam Jinnah and family are scheduled to meet President Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and other dignitaries during the stay.

He said Jinnah’s family would visit parliament today (Monday) to meet National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza and other dignitaries.

He said Reality Welfare Organisation (RWO), a Rawalpindi-based NGO, had organised a reception at Rawalpindi Press Club for the Jinnah’s family on Tuesday.

Later, Aslam Jinnah and family were shifted to the Bait-ul-Maal’s main office amid tight security.

He is not really the direct great grandson of Quaid-e-Azam. He is the direct great grandson of Quaid-e-Azam's elder sister, but I'm sure Quaid-e-Azam cared for his elder sister (even if he was closest to his youngest sister), so Pakistan government should care for him...thats what Quaid-e-Azam would've wanted for the descendents of his siblings.

PM announces financial assistance for the Quaid’s relatives
ISLAMABAD, Jun 29 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani received Aslam Jinnah, his wife and daughter, Zainab, the relatives of Quaid‑e‑Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah here at his Parliament House Chamber on Monday evening. The Prime Minister said that the whole nation is indebted to the Father of the Nation for achieving a separate homeland for the Muslims of the sub‑continent.

He said that the befitting way to pay glowing homage to Quaid‑e‑Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah is to follow his footprints and principles of “unity, faith and discipline”.

This is the only way to overcome internal and external challenges being faced by the country, he added.

The Prime Minister presented a cheque of Rs. 600,000, handed over keys of a car and announced provision of a house at Karachi for the family.

He also announced monthly financial assistance of Rs. 50,000 for the family.

The Prime Minister also directed the Ministry of Health for immediate provision of best medical facilities for ailing Zainab and the wife of Aslam Jinnah.

Aslam Jinnah thanked the Prime Minister for providing financial assistance for his family.

MD Pakistan Baitul Mall Zamurd Khan was also present on the occasion.

Spot On........Zardari is very shrewd politician. After seeing his moves in the last year and half, no doubt our agencies failed to prove him guilty in court while everybody knows surrey palace UK can’t be bought using revenue of cinema tickets.

After watching Quaid's relative home and difficulties faced by them every day in some news report, I honestly felt ashamed. I just don't want to put that video here. The person who gave us the biggest gift, a free land and we Pakistan, our rulers can't provide him food, a monthly allowance and better accommodation. Can’t they spare an extra car from their protocol fleet for Mr. Jinnah relatives so they can travel around Karachi with his handicapped daughter? Screw Politicians.

However, I’m pleased for whatever reason, some moments of joy came is their lives and some respect and protocol given to them by politicians.

Aslam Jinnah’s claim of being Quaid’s family disputed

KARACHI: Liaquat Merchant, who is the grandson of Maryam Bai, one of Quaid-e-Azam’s sisters, has said that Aslam Jinnah, who claims to be the great grandson of the founder of Pakistan, is not from the Jinnah family. “He might belong to Nathoo Poonja’s family, who is Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s father’s brother, but he does not directly belong to Quaid’s family and I say this firmly on the basis of my personal knowledge,” said Merchant.

Just a day ago, the federal government announced that Aslam Jinnah would be given a house, car and Rs 50, 000 monthly. “I do not object to the government giving him (Aslam Jinnah) anything, but he must stop introducing himself as Quiad-e-Azam’s family member,” he further said.

In an exclusive interview with this scribe, when he was asked about his reaction to the government’s decision, he reiterated that he has no objection at all. “All I am concerned with is the fact that Aslam Jinnah is not from Quiad-e-Azam’s family and nothing else,” he said, adding that if Aslam Jinnah wants to meet him, he would certainly meet Aslam.

He said that he was recently invited to present Jinnah’s Anthology, which has been published recently. Answering a question, he said that he was not invited for official programmes, especially those held to honour the Father of the Nation while adding that if given a choice he would love to attend the programmes. “It is not important to take flowers to Quaid’s mausoleum, but in fact it is more important to follow the teachings, principles and guidelines that Muhammad Ali Jinnah has left for our guidance,” said Merchant.

Talking about the family tree, Merchant said that Quaid's father was Jina Poonja and his (Quaid's) uncles were Walji Poonja and Nathoo Poonja. “Only Walji Poonja’s son is alive and lives in Khaaradar,” he said. Talking about Quaid's sisters, Merchant said that Jinnah had four sisters, including Rehmat bai, Mariam bai, Ahmed Shirinbai and Fatima Jinnah.

He said that Nasli Wadia, the son of Quaid’s daughter Dina Wadia still lives in Mumbai with his two sons Jay Wadia and Ness Wadia. Merchant, 68, is the grandchild of Quaid's sister Mariam Bai and his last name comes from the fact that his father, Habib Hussain, was a businessman in Mumbai. Merchant was also awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz for his outstanding public services for the education and health sectors in the country during Pervez Musharraf’s regime. Merchant is a reputed lawyer in Karachi and his daughter Fouzia and son Akbar, are also lawyers, which is now sort of a family profession. His other daughter, Faiza, is a teacher. As a young lawyer, Merchant first visited Karachi in 1964 and met Fatima Jinnah while she was living in Mohatta Palace. She insisted that he migrate from India. He returned to India but moved to Karachi in December 1967 after getting married in October and since than he is practicing law in Karachi. Today he runs Liaquat Merchant Associates, one of the most respected law firms in the country, in addition to being the administrator of Quaid-e-Azam’s estate established under the Aligarh Education Trust, Jinnah Foundation and tending to several other charities. He said that till date Aligarh Education Trust has provided educational scholarships to 5,000 students in 15 different fields including law, architecture, civil engineering, dairy farming and so on.

Many of our Pakistanis are living under poverty. Allah has blessed Pakistan with many natural resources, our leaders dont know how to make good use of those natural resources so they can help all 175 million Pakistanis living in Pakistan.

Despite the disputed claim, Mr. Aslam Jinaah still relative of Mr. Jinnah though not direct descendent, so he deserves more than what already been given to him.

ISLAMABAD: The great grandson of the founder of Pakistan Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah on Monday lauded the government for providing him facilities of house, car and Rs50,000 honorarium per month.

Aslam Jinnah, talking to APP, said Pakistan came into being after a long struggle and supreme sacrifices so it was the need of the hour to set aside all personal differences and unite to defend the country.

He said that his family had been living in miserable condition for the last 62 years adding that in past a number of politicians and high ups made promises for his welfare but did not fulfill them.

However, Aslam Jinnah, said he had no complaints against anyone in this regard as 'God is the best planner'.

Replying to a query, he said that despite having blood relation with the founder of Pakistan neither he asked for help nor complained to anyone. He said that his wife is a cancer patient and one daughter Zainab Jinnah is disabled.

His one daughter Rabia Jinnah had already passed away due to lack of proper treatment, he added.—APP
