It's not an alternative, it's nothing new - our national instinct to discover has always been within us. Science is just one discpline of that instinct. There is enough food in this world too feed everyone, the greed of man prevents the distribution of that food. The greed of man means people in third world countries work in farms all day to produce products they will never be able to afford to buy because they are deliberately priced to maximise profit.

For all the cures mankind finds with science, it's often to problems we've created with science too. Cancer is becoming increasingly common because of the free radicals released into the air through pollution, or the preservatives put in our food so we can buy and horde rather than freshly prepare. The vast majority of lung and heart related conditions are caused by smoking tobbaco, the vast majority of diabetes is caused by obesity - ie man eating too much, simple greed.
