I wasn't a very big fan (liked a few of his songs) But there is absolutely no doubt he was musically gifted and a pop-culture icon.

MTV and VH1 America changed their entire day of programming around to strictly running all his music videos and Purple Rain movie.

One song I discovered for the first time while watching Purple Rain was "take me with you" Its grown on me a little
