Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said the provision of modern medical facilities can be ensured to every person of society without any discrimination by improving the health sector through collective wisdom, determination and joint efforts.

He expressed the views addressing the 47th convocation of College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan at a hotel on Saturday. He said the Punjab government was introducing health insurance cards for providing best treatment facilities to people. He said, “We have to improve healthcare and make the scheme successful jointly. No political interference was tolerated in health and education sectors earlier nor will be in future. The challenge to improve the health sector is accepted and we have to improve the medical facility through joint efforts.” Shahbaz Sharif said though it was a difficult task yet not impossible. “Doctors are associated with a noble profession and they should not spare any effort in service to ailing humanity. Doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and persons associated with the medical profession rendered commendable services during the flood, earthquake and dengue and saved precious lives,” he added. The chief minister said, “We have also to fight against measles with the same spirit and protect children from the disease. Steps are being taken on a war footing for controlling measles as protecting innocent children from measles is our duty.”

Shahbaz Sharif said it was an honour for him to participate in the function of the Masiahs of the nation. He said after assuming office of chief minister, his participation in the function of doctors first was proof of his commitment that the health sector was the top priority of the Punjab government. He said that billions of rupees were spent for providing best treatment facilities to the masses and uplift of the health sector during the last five years. He said that now health sector is also on top priority of Punjab government. The chief minister said that the role of doctors was of great importance for protecting society from diseases and constitution of a healthy society. He said that despite having no knowledge and much experience about dengue doctors, nurses and paramedical staff displayed best performance and saved thousands of precious lives in natural calamities including dengue.

Shahbaz Sharif said, “Other countries have also acknowledged the valor and courage displayed by our doctors, nurses and paramedical staff during dengue which have been fighting against dengue for many years. He said, “Sri Lankan, Indonesian and Singapore experts acknowledged the fact that they had come here to teach us about dengue but they themselves went back after learning from our experts. Pakistan is rich in natural and human resources and we have capable manpower and renowned medical experts who have proved their metal throughout the world. Polio has been eliminated from all over the world but Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are three countries where it still exists which is a tragic and matter of pondering,” he added.

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Saturday asked for doctors’ advice regarding a public health initiative to issue health insurance cards to people who could not afford medical treatment.

Those who could not afford to pay for it would be given free medical treatment under the health insurance scheme. “This is a very tough task but it is possible,” he said. There were many problems with the health sector, he said.

“The Punjab government is already the best employer for doctors. We want to further improve the doctors’ salary packages, but then the performance should match the salaries,” said Sharif.
