LAHORE: A symposium on World Diabetes Day (WDD) was held at Alhamra Hall on The Mall on Sunday at which Senator Pervaiz Rashid said he would submit a privilege motion in the senate for a complete ban on sheesha from the country, The Express Tribune has learnt.

Rashid said that the unchecked sheesha outlets near Gaddafi Stadium are spoiling the youth.

He said that various studies show that addictive drugs like cocaine, marijuana and heroine are added to the flavoured tobacco in some cases by the outlet managements and in others by the customers. He said that the Punjab government could not immediately impose the ban on sheesha outlets. However, he said, the government was contemplating some strategy to ban the outlets from the city.

Task Force on Spurious Drugs chairman Dr Saeed Elahi said that the WDD’s slogan, Prevention is Better than Treatment, should be popularised in order to control diabetes.

Prof Dr Javed Akram, the Allama Iqbal Medical College principal, said that all parks in the province should be used for healthy purposes. He said that if the government made the healthy use of parks a policy then use of sheesha would be banned automatically.

He said that all outlets near Gaddafi Stadium should be removed to ensure the health of the youth. He said that that sheesha is a fast growing business as its start up cost is as low as Rs100,000. He said that each customer has to pay Rs520 for one session, from which the outlet may net as much as Rs500 profit.

He said that he hoped that the Punjab government would ban sheesha within months. He said over 5,000 people got free tests from the stalls at Alhamra on the occasion of the WDD.

Post Graduate Medical Institute principal Prof Dr Tariq Salahuddin said taking prevention measures alone would help people to avoid becoming diabetes patients.

Dammit, its just a harmless sheesha man, ban alcohol, prostitutes to prevent kids from spoiling... but why sheesha :(

Plz specify Pakistani Punjab in the title so people don't get misled.

This is a Pakistani defence forum, no need to specify, it should be understood.

thats the stupidest thing i've ever read.....Sheesha is not as bad as cigarettes are. Being a former heavy (and now occasional) smoker, I would know. Sheesha brings out more smoke, but it contains negligible amounts of tar

nobody puts cocaine in sheesha, that would be a retarded thing to do......charas or weed, yes people do that but then again people put those things in cigarettes, in rolling paper and even cigars.....will they ban those too?

addicts use spoon or even broken mugs to engage in their ills of heroin; ban those objects too?

flavoured Sheesha is a relatively recent phenomenon in Pakistan (not just Punjab). Non-flavoured hookah has been around for AGES. These guys are acting as if it suddenly just made its way to the country

what they should focus on is bootleg alcohol, making an example out of the opium/heroin mafia, and doing more to enforce traffic laws.......that in itself will save precious lives in the country and prevent people from going on wrong, non-prescribed path of life

No. People should just have a choice and be allowed to use their brains and their own judgement --to determine what is and what isnt good for them

with the sole exception of heroin/opium which should be strictly strictly banned.......

we should have a classification system like what DEA does in USA; e.g. heroin should be Class A drug meaning if dealers or consumers are caught with it the fines, jail time and other sanctions would be much larger and over-bearing

my own views though

Its bad enough alcohol is banned but now this. You can't expect the youth to stay at home and read the Quran or Pray all day long.

i dont think it would have much impact....the expats will just bring them back from countries like UAE and Saudi; in fact some people will get rich from these bans

kind of like the booze dealers; remember, in Pakistan --anything and EVERYTHING is available for the right price. Booze flows like water in Lahore, but in private circles, not public

so yes --it is a flawed policy; but then again, what isnt these days :lol:

If they want to make a difference they need to get serious and ban all smoking rather than just a knee jerk reaction, OMG this is corrupting our youth.

Besides if your going to ban some thing for Diabeties day high fat fast foods should be the target.
