LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said on Thursday it would increase health budget six times after coming to power.
Fifty percent of Basic Health Units (BHUs) in rural areas would also work round the clock, said PTI Information Secretary Shafqat Mahmood and Punjab General Secretary Dr Yasmin Rashid.
Addressing a press conference, they highlighted silent features of the party’s health policy that was unveiled some days ago in Islamabad.
They said the PTI was the “first” political party to give a proper health vision, adding that it would ensure better health facilities for people at grass roots level.
Dr Yasmin said the health policy aimed at improving healthcare system across the country and making it cost-effective for those who were living below the line of poverty. She said the PTI would raise health budget, establish a health equity fund for the poor and enhance health coverage by 100 percent in five years.
She said the PTI would devolve the Health Ministry functions from provinces to districts, and BHUs would work under the supervision of local governments instead of provincial ones.
Dr Yasmin vowed to introduce “revolutionary measures” to bring at least 50 percent decrease in pregnancy-related deaths.
She said that every year 3.6 million infants are born in the country while infant mortality rate stands at around 61 deaths per 1,000 live births.
Dr Yasmin said that around 100 million Pakistanis do not have proper sewerage or drainage system and as many others face food insecurity.
She said that under its five-point health policy, the PTI would take emergency measures to meet 40 percent shortage of doctors and 80 percent shortage of nursing staff.
Responding to a question, Shafqat Mahmood said that those people were deserting the PTI who were “opportunists” and had joined the party to get PTI tickets for general elections.
“But after observing the party chairman’s strict policy of following merit in the process of awarding tickets, they quit the PTI,” he said.
