PTI in the lead in KP with 34 seats
PESHAWAR: Though the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) has emerged as the largest political party in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by winning at least 34 seats of the provincial assembly, not a single party is in a position to form the government in the province.
Any political party or alliance needs the support of at least 63 members to obtain a simple majority in the 124-member Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, but this could be possible after the Election Commission announces the results on the women’s reserved and minority seats in the provincial assembly.
According to unofficial results, the PTI secured 34 seats, followed by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) with 16 and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) with 14 provincial assembly seats.
The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) got seven seats each in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly while the Awami National Party (ANP) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) bagged four and three seats respectively in the provincial assembly. However, the 13 independents could play a vital role in the formation of the future government.
“There is a possibility of a three-party alliance either among the PTI, JI and QWP or JUI-F, PML-N and QWP for forming the future government in the province,” political analyst Quresh Khattak said.
He said the PML-N and PTI would be an attractive platform for the independents as the former will form a government at the Centre while the PTI was in a position to lead the coalition government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Similarly, Maulana Fazlur Rehman would cash in on the opportunity, keeping in view the hate-speeches delivered by the PTI chief against the PML-N and JUI-F in the election campaign.When contacted, the JUI-F provincial information secretary Abdul Jalil Jan said the JUI-F was in contact with Nawaz Sharif and other politicians for the formation of the future government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
“Except PTI we can hold talks with any party for the formation of the government,” Abdul Jalil Jan said but hastened to add that it was his personal view as the party had not taken any final decision in this regard.
It is worth mentioning that soon after the Election Commission announced the official results, the independent elect-MPAs have to join a political party.Similarly, the Election Commission would also announce the names for 22 women reserved seats and three non-Muslim seats in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly for which the political parties had already given their priority lists to the provincial election commission.
