ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has now blamed former chief of army staff General (R) Ashfaq Parvez Kayani of allegedly rigging the general election 2013 to help Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) win.
This time, the PTI has also accused America, Untied Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, MI-6 and India of becoming part of the rigging. For the PTI, everyone else except itself rigged the election.
After Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and judiciary, Jang Group and a brigadier of Military Intelligence, now the foreign powers have also been accused along with the then chief of army staff.
Interestingly, Gen (R) Kayani is being accused at a time when he no longer holds the position of the COAS. Imran Khan straightened up his guns on former chief justice when Iftikhar Chaudhry has relinquished the charge of his office.
The PTI deputy information secretary, in a live television show, accused Gen (R) Kayani of rigging election for the PML-N. He even stated that Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Chaudhry Nisar had been meeting Gen (R) Kayani in the late hours of the night, and, as a result, the mandate was gifted to Nawaz Sharif.
It is important to mention here that Imran Khan too has been sharing the same views that Gen (R) Kayani had rigged the election with his close associates in PTI party meetings and a few media persons. For the media persons with whom Imran has shared his thoughts, PTI’s deputy information secretary’s allegations were a reflection of what PTI chief thinks and says in party meetings.
Sources in the PTI say that Imran Khan did not say anything about former Iftikhar Chaudhry before his retirement and similarly he kept mum over Gen (R) Kayani’s alleged role in rigging and it is likely that Imran will also accuse officials of top defence institutions right after their retirement.
Imran Khan and his PTI have accused everybody under the sun of becoming part of rigging in 2013 election. Imran in a bid to balance his pro-army stance also alleged that a brigadier of
Military Intelligence had rigged general election. When Khan was asked to name that army officer, he said that he will name him in his May 11, 2014, speech. Many months have passed, Khan has made numerous speeches but his followers keep on waiting for the announcement of the name of MI’s brigadier, but Imran once again preferred pointing his guns at other targets instead of naming the army officer.
Imran Khan also accused Jang Group of becoming part of rigging without any proofs. When Imran was belied with evidence, he turned his guns on others. Imran had alleged that Geo aired Nawaz Sharif’s victory speech too early but when it was proved that it was not Geo which aired Nawaz Sharif first but other channels aired it before Geo, then PTI Secretary Information Shireen Mazari gave a statement that they never said Geo aired it first thus belying her chairman on media. Imran still has been unable to bring any evidence of Jang Group’s involvement in rigging 2013 election.
Free and fair Election Network (Fafen), the largest network of voter monitoring and fraud monitoring, which Imran Khan frequently cites, has said Geo News can’t be held responsible for any rigging and in fact played a positive role in exposing rigging in May 2013.
