LAHORE: PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif expressed displeasure on Monday, at the PTI government over ‘irresponsibility’ about China Pakistan Economic Corridor.

The former Punjab chief minister taking into account the circulating Financial Times report of the government reviewing the CPEC agreement, on his official Twitter handle voiced his displeasure and termed the government ‘irresponsible’.

“People of Pakistan are shocked at the irresponsibility of PTI government, which is trying to undermine Pakistan-China strategic partnership, by speaking in the voice of our enemies on CPEC! We will resist & reject such conspiracies, our Chinese friends should rest assured,” stated his tweet.

According to the FT report, Prime Minister Imran Khan’s commerce adviser Abdul Razak Dawood was reported to have said: “Chinese companies received tax breaks, many breaks and have an undue advantage in Pakistan; this is one of the things we’re looking at because it’s not fair that Pakistan companies should be disadvantaged.”

Dawood had earlier today denied the FT report claiming that his statements were taken out of context.

Chinese embassy in Islamabad also issued a strong-worded statement, saying that the FT report was based on "distorted and misquoted information.

“It is a firm consensus between China and Pakistan that the CPEC is a mutually beneficial project and both the governments will carry it forward according to the needs of Pakistan and for the development of Pakistan,” the embassy said.

“Such ill-intentioned reports based on distorted and misquoted information only demonstrate that the report contributor has total ignorance and neglect of the CEC of the CPEC or China-Pakistan traditional partnership,” it added."

Pakistan, China refute Financial Times' CPEC report, resolve to expand cooperation

The governments of both Pakistan and China on Monday refuted an article published in the Financial Times (FT)which had alleged that Pakistan is looking to renegotiate its position in Beijing's Belt-Road Initiative (BRI).

In the article "Pakistan rethinks its role in Xi’s Belt and Road plan" the FT, while quoting Adviser for Commerce, Textile, Industry and Production, and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood, said Pakistan "should put everything on hold for a year so we can get our act together."

The adviser for commerce was also quoted as saying that the Chinese companies "received tax breaks ... and have an undue advantage in Pakistan; this is one of the things we’re looking at because it’s not fair that Pakistani companies should be disadvantaged.”

The article also mentions Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's recent statement that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) "has not inflicted a debt burden on Pakistan. When these projects get completed and enter into operation, they will unleash huge economic benefits.”

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Textile on Monday, the Pakistan government "rejects the article especially the title."

"The statements attributed to Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce and Textile have been taken out of context and distorted," the statement said while reiterating that CPEC is a "national priority for the government."

Moreover, China also issued a statement through its embassy in Islamabad and said there was a "firm consensus between China and Pakistan that CPEC is a mutually beneficial project and both governments will carry it forward according to the needs of Pakistan".

The statement from the Chinese embassy called the FT article "ill-intentioned" and "based on distorted and misquoted information."

Later in the day, the government issued another statement saying Pakistan and China will continue to work towards implementing ongoing CPEC projects and expand the initiative to new areas of cooperation, Radio Pakistan reported.

RadioPak, while quoting a statement of the Foreign Office, said that the new areas that the two governments would work on include "socio-economic development, poverty alleviation, anti-corruption, agricultural cooperation and industrial development."

The state-run website said that this resolve to expand the Pak-China partnership was reached during FM' Yi's three-day visit to Pakistan.

I think this is not economic team but a team of journalists. If this team is so interested in media send them under the ministry of Fawad Chaudary rather than economy. They are busy picking fights with TLP China and rest instead of doing their job.

I disagree, As an economic graduate, i fully endorse the suggestions given by advisory council. There's more than macro economics at work here. The bitter reality is, our economy is in bad shape, tough measures needs to be taken and they are going to be painful.

That was totally taken out of context. He explained the whole thing in Dr. Shahid Masood's Program today.
He was just giving an example of cheese and he said smartphones and luxury cars.
And we spend $1 Billion on import of smartphones each year.

Pakistan denies FT report it is reviewing CPEC agreements

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday denied a Financial Times report that it was reviewing projects pertaining to the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Abdul Razak Dawood, the Prime Minister’s advisor on commerce, textiles, industries and investment, issued a detailed clarification on Monday contradicting the report published in Financial Times on September 9th with the title “Pakistan rethinks its role in China’s Belt and Road plan”.

Dawood said that his statements were taken out of context, adding during the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the two had stressed on advancing the enterprise.

He reiterated that the country’s commitments to CPEC would remain the same and would be honored.

The report claimed that Pakistan was contemplating evaluating the CPEC agreement with China claiming that Beijing-owned corporations were being given unfair benefits.

It quoted Dawood saying the agreement "unfairly benefits Chinese companies."

“The previous government did a bad job negotiating with China on CPEC — they didn’t do their homework correctly and didn’t negotiate correctly so they gave away a lot,” The Financial Times cited him.

Dawood was reported to have said; “Chinese companies received tax breaks, many breaks and have an undue advantage in Pakistan; this is one of the things we’re looking at because it’s not fair that Pakistan companies should be disadvantaged.”

The adviser was quoted as saying: “I think we should put everything on hold for a year so we can get our act together,” he added. “Perhaps we can stretch CPEC out over another five years or so.”

Dawood is a renowned businessmen who founded Descon Engineering, which is involved in Engineering and Construction, Chemicals, Power and Inspection. It is perhaps the first Pakistani multinational company which is operating in six countries, according to commerce ministry.

The projects concerned are part of the $62bn China-Pakistan Economic Corridor plan — by far the largest and most ambitious part of the BRI, which seeks to connect Asia and Europe along the ancient silk road. It also includes a huge expansion of the Gwadar port on Pakistan’s south coast, as well as road and rail links and $30bn worth of power plants.

As per the report, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi, who visited Islamabad at the weekend, indicated that Beijing could be open to renegotiating its 2006 trade deal with Pakistan.

However, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi assured his Chinese counterpart that the new government considers CPEC project as 'immensely strategic and of national importance for Pakistan'.

"We are highly grateful for the personal attention Chinese leadership has accorded to the implementation of CPEC. CPEC will remain a priority for the Government. We will ensure that ongoing projects are implemented at the earliest and at the same time, we will explore new avenues of cooperation under CPEC," he said during a joint press conference with Wang Yi after the two sides held detailed talks.

Moreover, Finance Minister Asad Umar and Advisor Dawood said Pakistan would be careful not to offend Beijing. “We don’t intend to handle this process like Mahathir”, Umar told FT.

It is pertinent to note that Malaysia has cancelled three China-backed pipeline projects and put a showpiece BRI rail link under review.

My friend so do the macro and micro economics both who is stopping them. Why make a public show out of it even before starting.

The biggest problem of PTI is discipline there is no discipline.

I know it is taken out of context. My question is why is he going public. This is not his job he is economic advisor to Imran Khan not information minister he should only advise Imran Khan. Let Fawad Chaudry do his job.

When you will make an economic team out Dawn columnists this was destined to happen.

Now tell me who is the person on this economic team who suggested that Pakistan's economic problem is cheese?

Imran ager CPEC band bhi kerdy tu bhi ham usky sath hain.

IMO, They are being forced to go public cuz of this obnoxious media. Since the govt took charge, i've seen atleast 4 Fake news on DAWN alone. Hike in gas tariff, CM usman buzdar character assassination etc.
As per my DEAN, who is also a part of advisory council, Chinese were not pleased with NS for cashing in the success of CPEC.

Yes there are fake news but Dawood gave a statement to media. Why?
He is an economic advisor not media advisor.

This is Dawood's statements before even he was advisor. This whole economic team has anti-CPEC agenda and they will give PMLN a voice to get attention again.

This economic council has conflicts on interests.
