Friday, May 22, 2015 - Islamabad—After the restless and appreciable efforts of the present government, the Pakistan Railways (PR) has succeeded to a great extent in winning the passengers’ confidence as a result travellers are now preferring train over public transport.
The traditional non-compromising attitude of the transporters and passenger-friendly policies of Pakistan Railways attracted a large number of passengers as after several years a heavy crowd of passengers with families is being witnessed at different railway stations including Rawalpindi.
Talking to APP, a number of passengers said now they were preferring to travel by train because of low fares as compared to private transport.
“I am thankful to the Railways administration which improved its services in all the trains across the country,” said Sohaib Mansha, a passenger returning to Rawalpindi from his hometown from Karachi.
He said the PR’s overhauled fleet had mitigated sufferings of the passengers as quality services were being provided at reasonable fare. “The PR has won hearts of the public,” he added.
After many years, he said, he had seen well-cleaned trains and efficient staff at railway stations. A Lahore-bound passenger Qasim Ali, who was sitting in the waiting room of Rawalpindi station, said he was highly impressed by the punctuality of the trains which was a major issue for the commuters.
After more than 10 years, he said, he along with his family was travelling by train as they were equipped with all modern facilities, besides departing and arriving as per schedule.
An office-bearer of the Daily Passengers Association of Pakistan Railways said the department had ensured to maintain high standards and punctuality under the supervision and leadership of Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique.
He said passengers had stopped using railways but following the concerted efforts of the government, they have returned to train journey showing trust in the national fleet.
A senior official in the Railways Ministry told APP that it was the result of dedication of staff and workers who worked day and night to regain past glory of the Railways as per the vision of the Minister.
He said the Railways had devised a multi-pronged strategy bringing maximum number of passengers and freight trains at the track for which special attention was giving to upgrade its difference sectors.
Under the vision-2025, he said the PR was given the target to enhance its ‘market-share’ from four percent to 20 percent, which would be easily achieved.
Accordingly, he said, the reformatory steps were taken to make the Railway Board functional, rationalization of the staff was in progress, restructuring of administrative hierarchy and post of General Manager Operations had been upgraded. On May 15, he said, the PR achieved another milestone by launching the Greenline, a new non-stop train between Karachi and Islamabad with an aim to provide the passengers economical, comfortable and secure journey.—APP
