Environmentalist Ainun Nishat at a seminar said projection about inundation of large part of Bangladesh due to sea level rise is not factual.

When the sea will rise up to that level, Bangladesh could adjust techniques to fight back the catastrophe, he said at the seminar in Dhaka, titled 'Protection of Bangladesh coast from adverse effect of climate change: Things to do to save from tidal flow in monsoon'

Professor Ainun Nishat said other nations in the world want to learn from Bangladesh about how to protect coast.

"Many people say 17 per cent of Bangladesh coastal area will be submerged. It's not a fact," he added.

If there was no embankment, it could happen. But there is a 12-15 feet embankment in the coastal area.

With the detrerioration of climate situation, Bangladesh would build stronger embankments to prevent rising water level, he hoped.

"If sea level rises by 1 meter, it may inundate 17 per cent coastal area. But it will take 100 more years to happen," said Hasan Mahmud, president of parliamentary committee on environment and forestry ministry. Preventive measures are possible against this potential threat, he added.

According to an essay presented at the seminar, as much as 15 cyclones hit the Bangladesh coastal area in past few years, leaving scores of people dead and about 5 million people homeless.

Coast Trust executive director Rezaul Karim moderated the seminar.

embankments made of mud walls..... good luck... they don't hold up during tropical cyclones and storms...

aka... sunderbans... that forest is a gift from god for us. saved our *** during sidr...

Yes,Sundarban is very important for the defence of BD.It absorb most of the force of cyclone and make it weak before reaching densely populated areas.

Which thread is not muddied? Why do you worry about what I say? You just do not know how this @Nilgiri comes up with fictitious doomsday forecast about BD. Do u think, someone has to call the Indians to speak up their minds?
It's not really necessary to know nilgiri's viewpoint in every thread. I know he'd come start doing what he does whether you mention him or not. But really mentioning him this way is basically asking for a trollfest. Soon like every other thread in this section, it will become a BD vs India comparison, d!ck measuring.

I know one professor who made a thesis on environmental politics, criticizing the environmental hazards caused by Chevron in Bangladesh, and in the process, exposed several known faces in the country involved in the environmental movements/research as to how they were bought by Chevron and other MNCs... Ainun Nishat was one of them...

Note that the new US administration has a clear policy of Climate Change denial...

Ainun Nishat was our hall provost .... back in those days..
He had a unique way of resolving the conflicts between students. Just support the bigger and stronger mass. :)

He was a hall provost? That just made my opinion about him quite legit...

Tell this no name in OP to make an actual press conference so we can see if the world gives a damn about the BBS/BAL denial+fake attitude.
