A pro-North Korean organization in Japan pressed Tokyo to immediately roll back sanctions on North Korea, blaming Japan for scrapping the 2014 deal between Pyongyang and Tokyo on easing sanctions.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said earlier this week that Japan is working to impose its own sanctions on North Korea for its recent nuclear test and long-range rocket launch. Abe made the comments in a telephone conversation with South Korean President Park Geun-hye.

The Japanese move is "an unpardonable action to create new artificial obstacles" in relations between North Korea and Japan, the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan said in an English-language statement carried by North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency.

"Japan's acts will have serious impact" on the bilateral relations, the statement said, as it demanded the "immediate withdrawal of the unwarranted sanctions."

The association has been serving as a de facto embassy between Pyongyang and Tokyo, which have never established diplomatic relations.

Nam Sung-u, a senior official of the association, claimed that Japan unilaterally scrapped the Stockholm deal by slapping sanctions against North Korea.

Under the deal reached in Sweden's capital in 2014, North Korea agreed to look into again the fate of Japanese abductees. In return, Japan agreed to lift part of its sanctions on Pyongyang and give humanitarian aid to the reclusive country "at an appropriate time."

Japan denounced North Korea for its decision to halt the reinvestigation.

"It is deplorable that North Korea declared a suspension of investigations ... after unilaterally claiming that our side has nullified the Stockholm agreement," Japan's Kyodo news agency quoted Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida as telling reporters in Ottawa. He also said that Japan is not thinking about scrapping the agreement.

The abduction issue has been one of the key hurdles for diplomatic normalization between North Korea and Japan.

In 2002, then North Korean leader Kim Jong-il admitted to then Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in Pyongyang that the North had abducted 13 Japanese citizens in the 1970s and 1980s to train its spies on the Japanese language and culture.

The North at the time returned five of the abductees and claimed the other eight were dead, though Japanese officials believe that some of them may still be alive. (Yonhap)

Well the stick does not seem to be working with North Korea, maybe a carrot could help?

I agree, i do really think these unilateral and multilateral sanctions , tho are in principle meant to assuage Pyongyang to yield, only force our North Korean partners to more desperate feelings. I would liken it to the days when Iran was still under international sanctions, when international relations between Tehran were less sanguine. Now let us fast forward to the present when sanctions are removed, relations between Tehran and Beijing, Tokyo, Brussels, Washington, Delhi et al --- seem to be improving dynamically. Not to mention creating this perception of more stability and saving the region from more --- disparaging situation. I believe it applies to North Korea.

Ultimately, my friend, North Korea is really a benign state. When was North Korea involved in radical ideology and in support of global uprising? When did North Korea behead people and publish it for international media consumption? Any instances of contingency on the 38th parallel seem to be limited and a rare occurrence that seems to be easily handled through bilateral channels.

North Korea is a hermit kingdom, so to say. She is isolated as it is. Why further isolate an isolated entity? It serves no purpose. Perhaps investing in more dialogue in conjunction with more trade options --- can encourage Pyongyang to better integrate with the region and the rest of the world. Afterall, i believe that with integration --- means a reduction in instance of necessity for provocation since contingency would lead to collateral effects.

China should take action against the N.Korean regime. The fact that N.Korea smuggles drugs to China alone is a good reason and the de-stabilizing influence on the region and publicly developing WMDs also poses a major threat to China than Japan or US.
Japan has very little infleunce on N.Korea than China. This is one of the areas where Japan and China should cooperate for the peace and stability of the region

I agree absolutely with you, and what is more important is that Japan should restore trade relations with North Korea. Immediately.
