Pro-Kurdish BDP deputies praise suicide bomber terrorist
Words from a Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) deputy praising a Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorist who caused the deaths of eight Turkish soldiers in a suicide attack on June 30, 1996, have caused great resentment and anger among the Turkish public, but other BDP deputies have expressed their support for the initial statement.
On June 30, the BDP held a commemoration ceremony in Diyarbakır for Zilan, the code name of Zeynep Kıyacı who blew herself up along with eight Turkish soldiers in an attack in which 29 soldiers were injured 16 years ago. BDP İstanbul deputy Sebahat Tuncel in a speech she gave here praised the terrorist, saying: A great price has been paid over the past 30 years. We owe it to our friends [who died] that we can be in politics and comfortably say what we want to say today.
Her words came on Friday, as President Abdullah Gül was receiving BDP deputies Ahmet Türk and Şerafettin Elçi to look for a solution to a crisis caused by the BDP's refusal to be sworn in as deputies last week after the Supreme Election Board (YSK) declared BDP deputy Hatip Dicle ineligible to serve in Parliament.
In comments on Tuncels words, BDP Şanlıurfa deputy İbrahim Binici said on Saturday: The conflict should come to an end. Discourses of peace and brotherhood should be emphasized, but then added: Why are Sebahats words so shocking? We see them as heroes from where we stand. Those people [the PKK] are not picking flowers and picnicking on mountaintops. They have been subject to inhumane treatment and chosen armed struggle. We want to take this issue to the political arena. But as the Dicle decision shows clearly, they dont want us in politics. We cant call the peoples movement terrorism. Mandela and Castro were terrorists once, now they are heroes. Dont expect us to [say they are terrorists]. The PKK is a peoples movement, everyone should understand that.
Hasip Kaplan, the BDPs Şınrak deputy, on Friday expressed a similar opinion during a speech at the general council meeting of the Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions (KESK). There is UN resolution number 665 that states that if a dictator is denying rights and freedoms to a group of people, the oppressed have other rights. What we are saying is this: Let us in Parliament, and let us solve this. This is why people voted us in. Dont put under arrest the will of the people, dont put it in shackles. What you call a terrorist is a hero; a patriot in our book.
