Prisoners take control of Chhatisgarh jail

BHOPAL: Prisoners on Monday evening held more than 10 security staff and policemen captive and took control of a Chhattisgarh jail after a raiding party went inside to identify inmates who were using mobile phones to make extortion calls.

A large police force has been sent to Katghora jail in Korba district of Chhattisgarh. The police said it was not immediately known whether prisoners were armed.

Reports reaching here said, the inmates had locked all the prison doors from inside, cut electric connections and snapped telephone lines. The entire jail has plunged into darkness and the police were trying to arrange for halogen lamps before entering the jail. Till the filing of the story, the police were waiting for the Chhattisgarh DIG (jails) to reach the spot.
