Prince Mohammed bin Salman, deputy Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday (May 30th).

According to the information available, the talks will discuss bilateral cooperation between the two countries, as well as Syria and Iran. Some 4 cooperation protocols will be signed between the two countries.

The prince is expected to leave to Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, after his meeting with the Russian president.

Dialogue is the right thing to do and MbS and other leaders have done an excellent job at reaching out, signing new landmark deals with countries in almost all corners of the world (Arab world, Muslim world, West, East, Sub-Saharan Africa, South East Asia, Latin America) so meeting with the Russian leadership again is not surprising. Hopefully some interesting things will emerge from this meeting like the last time. Relations are not as bad as some people try to make them out to be.

However personally I am very much against Russia's role in Syria and its hard for me, for this very reason, to want anything groundbreaking to occur between KSA and Russia. In general, with all due respect to Russia, it's not really a country that you can trust too much and almost everything (if not everything) they can offer we can get from somewhere else.

This sounds overly negative and it might be. However I have deep affinity for the Muslims of Northern Caucasus (today a part of Russia after the occupation 150 years ago) and the Caucasian diasporas in the Arab world are some of the largest in the world. I myself have distant Circassian ancestry as have quite a few people in Hijaz, Sham, Iraq and Egypt.

I do wonder if something concrete will come out of this meeting other than the usual economic deals. Opening a new page with Russia, especially in their current situation (huge economic deficit, isolated and sanctioned by much of the world and an economy that has been rapidly collapsing since the crisis in Ukraine began) would not be too bad.

I mean UAE and Russia opened a new page and one of the consequences of this was a landmark coproduction of a 5th generation fighter jet.

I would like to hear you opinion about this meeting and its implications and in general the KSA/GCC/Arab relations with Russia. President Al-Sisi is going to meet Putin as well and I cannot imagine that this is a coincidence.

First of all, there are apparently some Saudi Navy cadets going through trainings in St-Petersburg in Russia.. rumours also talk about 5 Russian missile boats purchase!(well they have this potent missile boat called Molina, the same one that they have gifted Egypt with, following the arms deals, not sure if it is about it or some other ships)..
Second and to answer your question directly, The best for KSA is to keep normal and cordial relationships with Russia eventhough the latter is no match for the US economy-wise, it is still a superpower, although weakened by sanctions and global economics trends, nevertheless, if most advanced countries in the world, be it the Europeans, the Chinese or even the Americans are trying to have stable relationships with Russia, keeping good relations with it will yield more benefits to the GCC as a whole (hence the visit by Prince Mohammed), and irking it or provoking it won't lead any benefits at all apart from animosity that will play in the hands of Arab enemies and opponents.. In brief, there is nothing to lose in befriending Russia, but rather there are at least some political and economical gains..
A wise move IMHO..

Interesting. Looking forward to the outcome of this meeting which we might first learn about much later.

I don't think that alienating (being outright an enemy of Russia) is something that KSA/GCC has ever pursued or been but we have had certain political disagreements in the region, most recently Syria. However such disagreements should preferably be solved through dialogue and if KSA-Russia relations improve further we can influence Russia in our direction and vice versa.

Otherwise I fully agree with all of your points. Well said.

A $ 10 billion joint venture between Russia and Saudi Arabia
... During the meeting, Mantorov hailed the dynamic cooperation between the Russian Fund for Direct Investment and the Saudi sovereign fund, stressing the need to strengthen cooperation on promising tracks and seek new growth points such as aircraft, ships, nonferrous metals, machinery and pharmaceuticals, radio, electronics etc."

Saudi Arabia can invest in information technology in Russia. This sector is experiencing remarkable growth. In 2009, revenues were $ 2.9 billion and revenues in 2015 were $ 7 billion! Knowing that America is dumping the world markets through its companies to control this vital sector!
It is worth noting that Russia is establishing IT-Parks in several Russian cities...
