Prime Minister Imran Khan calls on overseas Pakistanis to donate to dams fund

. . .
I think this is not a viable plan ,what we need is not donations infact we need proper financial discipline ,Already last Govt was able to pay 100 Billion Rs from our local resources ,I fear such policies dont work ,knowing the corruption in Pakistani bureaucracy level ,most of this money will not be well spent ,my two cents ,on side note DAMS are more important even if we have to cut defense budget

Cut defense budget by $2bn and increase taxes on super rich and audit them and voila you have your dam.

I understand the spirit of donating to a fund to dam, but is it really the most efficient way to raise funds for infrastructure projects like this, especially as one as massive as building a dam? Wouldn't it be better to float a bond to fund such a project? The interest would be greater, and not just among the Pakistani diaspora, but foreign investors as well.

Why? What do overseas Pakistanis get out of this? Probably not even decent service as soon as overseas Pakistanis land at the airport... That's where they first learn bribery and corruption.

I'm willing to contribute, but as yet do not trust this government - thanks to those that have recently joined PTI and are sitting in positions of power.

But if I see actual change over the next few months, I will gladly contribute to help build Pakistan.

I will even invest money in setting up a business in Pakistan - if that manhoos PPP can be forced out of Karachi/Sindh :hitwall: being from Karachi, it's the only place I can practically set something up.

cool. has anyone sent the money from the UK? IBAN is a long number. is it best to go to the branch of the bank or can it be done online?
best to sort it out in branch, or least thats what i had to do with international payments before with my bank.

Imran Khan is a populist. This is a populist kind of move. It's changed the news cycle, nobody is talking about Atif Mian anymore.

Will it fund the dams entirely - probably not. Will it help, of course it will, and it gives the people a sense of involvement, an us vs them, it's very good politics.

Most ridiculous way to collect fund. These type funds are collected to help people in distress, for natural calamity, for building mosque or temples or some religious activity etc. But these type projects(Dams) require bonds or some other type investment options where the investors are guaranteed some sort of returns....may be small interest. Otherwise donations will come, but it will very small to serve any purpose. or you can try to convert black money into white by offering some concessions. Everybody is miser...be it hard earned or through corrupt means.

But mind it, if you give donation as per IK....maximum percent will be pilfered with zero accountability.
