ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Tuesday demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, compounding pressure on a coalition government shedding support.

Fazlur Rehman made the call just hours after the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the main coalition partner of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), announced that it was quitting the federal cabinet, although would not join the opposition.

“The prime minister should resign and the PPP should appoint a new one,” Fazlur Rehman told reporters.

His own Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F party walked out on December 14 after Gilani sacked one of its three cabinet ministers over a war of words with religious affairs minister Hamid Saeed Kazmi, a PPP member, who was also fired.

Their spat related to a corruption scandal reportedly implicating Kazmi’s ministry in booking accommodation for tens of thousands of Pakistani pilgrims.

“He (Gilani) has sabotaged the process of reconciliation among coalition partners and his actions have caused political instability in the country,” said Rehman.

“The government is under pressure and the president will have to take this step.”

The departure of JUI-F reduced the PPP’s coalition to 185 seats in the 342-member national assembly.

The MQM says it is withdrawing its two cabinet ministers over differences with the PPP, but has yet to join the opposition. The loss of its 25 lawmakers would leave the coalition in a parliamentary minority and could bring down the government.

I do not understand the politics of this country, these people are in this country for one reason alone, to loot all there is and fill their pocket while they can.

Who is Fazlur Rahman to ask for Gilani to resign, though I am no fan of Gilani but I have to give credit to him for diverting major political disasters in Pakistan.

I guess the Diesel permits must have been reduced or ended by PPP.

.
he should shut his pie-hole and quit being a sore loser.....fed up of all these people

A very bad move, in order to attract a foreign investment a stable government needs to be presented. Whoever doesn't want Gilani should have his or her opinions expressed when time for voting comes.

If unstable i to be the identifier of Pakistan then chances of success are dim.

.
you think they care? They will gladly screw eachother over till kingdom come, regardless of the opportunity cost

i didn't use to be so vocal on this political garbage; but these vendettas and games have got to end. Maybe its asking for too much.

Some drastic changes are in the air. Well pakistan has to go through this phase better replace the prime minister than the govt.
Zulfiqar Mirza is ready to resign. Things may get a bit better. If PPP Govt comes successful out of this crisis it will be able to complete five years. This will be a really good news for the politics of this country after decades.
