President Zardari donates all body organs
Updated at: 1905 PST, Wednesday, March 17, 2010
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday became the first President to donate all his body organs, after signing a landmark bill to regulate transplant of human organs in the country.

The President made the announcement of “donating his whole body” after his life, as he inked the document in a ceremony held at Aiwan-e-Sadr, also attended among others by Federal Ministers and health experts.

President Zardari said he took the decision in light of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto’s philosophy of living for others.

The President said Pakistan was singled out in the world community due to the notorious trade of organ transplant of body organs and urged the Parliament and the doctors to create awareness about the issue among the masses.

He asked the doctor’s community to inform the government in case of any violation and help save precious lives.

“No law can be effective without people’s support,” the President said and sought the help of the masses in countering the illegal trade.

The President said “Pakistanis were a responsible nation and known for being thoughtful, forgiving and loving.”

Zardari said only a small mindset was bringing bad name to the country. “What we look for is discipline of mind,” he added.

The law that now makes sale and unauthorized transplant of body organs punishable with up to 10 years in prison provides for a regulatory mechanism, including a high-level federal monitoring authority and evaluation committees, for the removal, storage and transplantation of human organs and tissues for therapeutic purposes.

The President said by using modern technology, Pakistan can be made a better place to live in and appreciated the political consensus evolved to make the legislation a success.

Guys, may be he is sorry for all wrong done and wants to make it up...;)

Give the poor guy a break....:partay:

Thank you for an empathetic human response.

I am not a Zardari supporter. By a LONG stretch. But I was disappointed to see that there was not one single word of appreciation about him doing - by any measure - a fairly noble thing. The fact of the matter is that the decision to donate an organ, much less all your organs, is not an easy one. There must exist an iota of good somewhere in him that caused him to take this step. Instead of reinforcing the good, we are quick to condemn or make fun of it. Can we please praise good actions, even if we cannot praise the person? Can we please be positive about the countless wonderful and great things about our country? Can we please dispense with our cutting sarcasm at least some of the time?

A very brace decision, Asif Ali Zardari! Good job, and we hope to see many more positive decisions and actions for you, which are in the interest of Pakistan and its people. :pakistan:

Thank you for the first part of your comment, re the noble gesture.

As to the second part of your comment, it has absolutely no truth to it whatsoever. Benazir Bhutto was also a Shia from Sindh, and her legacy is for all to see. Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Yusuf Raza Gilani are also Shia and Gilani, in particular, has earned a lot of appreciation recently for his balanced politics.

Quaid-e-Azam, also, sir, was a shia from Sindh. Do you see people criticizing him in Pakistan? This shia/sunni tension myth has been promoted in recent years by people who want to malign muslims. Several groups tried to generate sectarian strife in Iraq and failed miserably. The same has happened repeatedly in Pakistan. We don't differentiate between sunni and shia. It's all the same. We are all muslims.

Maybe there exists some iota of good somewhere in him who knows; however, he is donating all his organs which, he is well aware, he wont be requiring after his death. So basically he is donating a useless thing (for him) that is going to be wasted anyway if not used after his demise. And only time will tell if it will ever happen; first, he has to die in one piece (who knows how he dies), than Bilawal and others would have to play politics over his dead body; and than, may be, his organs if not already infested with some deadly virus, would find their way in the body of someone needy.

Question is valid, he would have been praised if he had agreed to bring his (which actually is not his but of Pakistanis) enormous wealth back and invested in Pakistan. His organ donation announcement is going to solve none of the problem(s) Pakistan is currently experiencing.

Very disappointing to see the sorts of responses this thread generated.

The man did something that should be commended. Raising awareness about organ donation and debunking myths around is it important.

Some of you perhaps would not be so flippant about his action were a loved one the recipient of a donated organ.

Credit where credit is due. Bravo Mr. President.

Agno, this tells what? that your personality should be trustworthy; unfortunately for Mr. Zardari, this is not the case. If the same announcement was made by General Kiyani, or Abdul Sattar Edhi, even Imran Khan, all of us were applauding unreservingly because we can trust them and their good character is in front of all of us. You have to become an example first before expecting people to follow you or even believing in what you are saying. Look at the noble character of Muhammed (PBUH), if Quran was bestowed upon a criminal, a crook, a murderer, would you think albeit of its (Allah's message) truthfulness, anybody would have believed it?

I generally don't like Zardari due to his past acts but I appluade his positive actions which includes this and promoting democracy. For the past few months certain media groups (Jang Group etc) cornered him but failed to depose him. These kind of acts create more uncertainty and instability in the country. Now that he is keen to restore true democracy through the restoration of 1973 constitution, we cannot bash him just because he is from a different sect or has a 'bad guy' image.

. . .
As Agno said we should appreciate him for this.

None of you will be brave enough to donate your organs.
