ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain on Friday stressed more investment in modern scientific and technological education and said the step was significant in bringing about quantum change in the nations intellectual and economic wealth.
Addressing the 52nd convocation of COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) at the Convention Centre here, the president said rapid advances in science and technology and modern knowledge today had become driver of all economic activities and innovations in the world.
Hussain said Pakistan had been lagging behind in significant and meaningful investment in higher education, yet it made major strides in discovering its true human potential and developing its human capital.
He expressed satisfaction that the government had increased budget for educational projects over next five years and commended its plans to see more meaningful industry engagement and university linkages across the country.
He said the government was committed to provision of accessible and affordable scientific education in the country and was endeavouring to make it more relevant and socio-economically more impactful for the society.
He lauded the services of COMSATS for playing its role in providing quality education to its students. He urged the graduating students to use their degrees as a lever to move the world into a positive direction.
Terming the graduates as the countrys future leaders, he called upon them to use their knowledge for the betterment of society.
The president said, With knowledge in hand, you are ready to face the challenges of life. But whatever tasked you are assigned, always accomplish it with honesty and good intention, he advised the students present in the hall. He said learning was never a one-time deal but a life-long process and commitment.
He urged the graduates to be respectful to their parents and teachers who were a major source of success in their lives. He congratulated parents of the students whose toils, prayers and tears had brought achievement in the lives of students.
The president awarded degrees and medals to the distinguished students.
Earlier, Minister for Science and Technology Zahid Hamid, who is also the Chancellor of CIIT said the institution was playing an important role in the promotion of science and technology at national and international levels.
He said CIIT was currently facilitating joint research and publication of journals in collaboration with clusters of scientific institutions in member countries.
Hamid said his ministry was working in liaison with CIIT to get input on educational projects particularly nano technology and fuel technology.
He urged the graduates to prove as torchbearers of knowledge in society and live up to the expectations of nation.
Rector S.M Junaid Zaidi presented report on the progress of CIIT and said the institution was pursuing the policy of merit in admissions.
He said the CIIT was investing on training of faculty members in top international academic institutions to ensure provision of quality education to its students.
As many as 567 students were declared successful graduates in the convocation in different disciplines including Electrical Engineering (181), Business Administration (139), Sciences (133), Information Sciences and technology (89) and Architecture and Design (25). app
