LAHORE –Like other parts of the world, preparations in the provincial metropolis to celebrate Christmas on 25th are under way as the December rolls around. From decorated trees to candles, exchanging of gifts to cake cutting, the Christian community looks busy to mark the 2011th birth anniversary of Jesus Christ, The Nation survey revealed.
Christmas preparations will reach on climax when jingling of bells and hymns at churches at the midnight of Dec 24 speak, “Joy to the world, the Christ is born.”
Christmas a few days away, the followers of Christ, want the day to be celebrated as a special day all over the country. The Christian fraternity looks busy buying different things like Christmas gifts, Christmas trees and happy Christmas cakes etc. The bazaars reflect hustle and bustle of the customers despite escalating inflation that hit their purchase power badly. The administrators of Churches are doing arrangements so that the celebrators feel free not only to pray but enjoy too. Churches in this regard are being washed and decorated with buntings and Christmas trees the most popular emblem of the time.
Christians in the city are gearing up for the big blessed day. Not just the followers of Christ, but shops and bazaars are getting into festive mood. The bakery points are being decorated with Christmas cakes and many more eatables.
It may be mentioned that Major Christmas ceremonies will be held at Cathedral Church, The Mall, Saint Mary Church in Cantt, Saint Anthony at Lawrence Road and Saint Mary Church in Kot Lakhpat where a large number of Christians including men, women and children will attend the prayers on the eve of Christmas.
Special candle lit service will be held at Cathedral Church Mall Road. Tableau’s at all leading schools including Cathedral School, St Anthony’s, St Peter’s, Convent of Jesus and Mary, Sacred Heart Scholl will be presented.
Carol singing, a Christmas symbol at functions, will also take place in the approaching days. The old carollers would take their lanterns to walk and sing till late at night and then coming home with cold-nipped faces. A choir practice on Friday held at Cathedral School, Hall Road. Rich plum Christmas cakes are being prepared in advance that will be offered on the special occasion.
Christmas trees, the most significant religious insignia, ranging from Rs 600 to Rs 25,000 would be displayed at churches. These trees will attract the children and youngsters of the Christian fraternity. Moreover, the pastors look busy making arrangements to celebrate the special day. The preparations for annual dinner functions of Christian institutions are underway.
A priest said,“We are preparing for Christmas Day which signifies the birth of Jesus Christ adding by opening the preparations on the first Sunday in December, we prepare ourselves by lighting candles each Sunday”. He stressed that “Christmas brings a message of peace. It is necessary to unite irrespective of caste, creed, color, or religion”.
George, a resident of Bihar Colony, said, "It is the spirit of Christians to give the received gifts to others.” The gifts as compared to the yesteryears, he complained, were costly and it was hard to buy them. Christmas, he said, is an occasion of re-union of the dear and near ones to share bliss and delight.
Samuel Masih, a Christian said, "Jesus Christ completely identified himself with the poor, deprived and the needy adding the need of the time is to revive that spirit even today.”

I like Christmas in Pakistan, the malls are decorated and best part there's no SNOW! Last Christmas I went to Isloo cuz some of my mother's family lives there. Had a great time!
