Radar integration begins on Indian Navy Ship for LR-SAM tests
December 17, 2013 by (FINN) Frontier India News Network 1 Comment
New Delhi: The new generation long-range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM) being primarily developed for the Indian Navy ships is now heading for the trials on an Indian naval ship. The radars and the support equipment is being integrated on a ship said an official source, who refused to name the ship.

In January 2006, India and Israel had signed a $350m agreement to co-develop the LR-SAM. The missile when developed, is projected to have a range of 70 km and weighing around 275 kg. The SAM’s length is about 4.5m, diameter 0.54m, wingspan 0.94m and can achieve Mach 2 speeds. Hyderabad-based Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) are the lead developers of the missile.

Some technologies are absolutely new with no parallels in the world and it took time to realise them, said the official when quizzed over the delays. Once the system is deployed, it will be a unique system in its class, he said. The front end of the missile including seeker is from IAI and the back end like including propulsion, actuators and others are ours, he said. Speaking on Indian components on the missile, the official said that the technologies have been perfected and have been derived

India clears proposal to buy 262 Israeli missiles

Xinhua | 2013-12-24

Indian Defense Ministry Monday cleared a proposal to buy 262 missiles from Israel to arm the Barak-I anti-missile defense systems for the Indian Navy, said local media reports.

The defense system would be fitted on the navy's frontline warships and the Indian Navy was running low on Barak missiles, said Hindustan Times online.

The proposal was shelved for several years as the country's Central Bureau of Investigation was probing a kickback case of the missiles in 2006.

The defense acquisition council (DAC) cleared the 8.8 billion rupee (140 million US dollars) deal after the case is closed for lack of evidence.

Israel has denied allegation on kickback to India when the two countries signed the contract 11 years ago to purchase the missiles.

It means some Indian ships will be without air cover for 3 years if the trials are plain sailing from now on,and at least 5 years there is any hiccup midway。

Ummm, no actually. CIWS Barak 1 system does exist. In others where there is no provision for barak 8, a russian missile system prevails.

Finally barak 8 is going on board INS Kolkata. :woot:
