as the saying goes Quit when u reach the top ....unfortunately Pranb Mukherjee wont get a redeeming chance, adored him as an individual, tremendous memory and wit considering his age.

Sad tht things turned out this way..the presidential seat wont help much,

but at least it clears the Finance ministry for an induction of fresh perspective & more competent individuals.

Montek doesn't have a chance because of political unacceptability (his westernized accent doesn't help ).

But it's all media .. which is creating a bad aura around him.. > with poverty line figures (which he didn't prescribe), or about the toilet renovation (which is happening all over the govt).

He has given the right support to Nandan Nilekani for Aadhaar .... and also was a significant brain behing the 1991 reforms.

I whole-heartedly support his becoming FM ..... but he needs a strong politico like Narasimha Rao in the PMs chair, not Manmohan Singh.

A big favorable factor is his age... much better than Manmohan Singh and even C Rangarajan.

I am even okay with Montek and C Rangarajan operating from behind the scenes, while Manmohan Singh (keeping the finance ministry with himself) provides a politically acceptable face to the reforms process.

But... the key is political strength is needed to get the GST thru... and Mamata isn't letting that happen easily. And that is a problem.

Thankfully.. the currency reforms were finished in the 1990s itself ... and capital account currency is not a priority. (in fact, it not being there may be a better thing to have).

Subsidies (esp petroleum, fertilizer and to some extent food subsidies) are another political heavy thing to clear. And also get the expenses in check as per budget amounts (incidentally, Chidambaram proved the best man to control expenses).

Fingers crossed, for now. !!!!!!

One should not post if don't know what he is talking.

He is being promoted to the President of India.

Pranab Mukherjee is running the govt. he is the head of over 100 committees of the govt. and important bodies.

He is also the chief trouble shooter of the govt. and enjoys the support and rapport in each and every political party be it BJP or communist or Muslim League.

And also he is the leader of the house in the parliament.

Not to forget he holds dozens of posts in the congress.

Now, He just don't want the credit of his work goes to the MMS and have done enough for the congress/govt.

He have stated it to Sonia Gandhi that make me PM or President or i will resign from the govt and the party that forces Sonia Gandhi to make him the candidate for the president.
