Power shortfall hits 3300MW in Pakistan

LAHORE: Electricity shortage in the country has reached close to 3300MW, causing difficulties for domestic as well as industrial consumers.

According to reports, domestic consumers are witnessing frequent power cuts of up to 17 hours while 8 to 10 hours of load-shedding is being recorded in the industrial sector.

The power crisis continued for the past many days as plants running through gas and hydel remained closed.

Presently, the PEPC is depending on the Furnace-run power plants, which are hardly generating 8000MW.

And a report from Karachi says; There is only 300,000 tons of furnace oil in the stock of the country which is hardly enough for generating electricity for 18 days.

According to sources of Petroleum Ministry, the oil companies have chalked out a plan to import further 270,000 tons furnace oil in January.

Almost 250,000 tons oil is expected to be refined by the local oil refineries during the same month.

Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry has made payment of Rs8 billion as circular debt to Pakistan State Oil, source said.

Electricity is not only short it is gettign extremely expensive due to monoply of state.
Till todate govt. is not willing to lower taxes on power generation equipment e.g. solar pannels, wind turbines or waste gas plants.
Traders of low power consuming lighting are earnign big time due ot high demand... which suggest every one in the country is switching to low power consuming lighting. normally those are 80% - 90% more efficient than classic lamp. This in turn meant that people of Pakistan have helped the PPP govt. by reducing their lighting load to 80% approx. in addition to organising solar power street lighting and portable petrol/gas generators.
Mainly, in every political regime electricity is stolen by the activists of ruling parties but in this coalition govt. activists of all parties are steeling electricity, in every citiy and village of Pakistan.
This is the plus point of being a political activist, you become above the law.
Jiala rule is about steeling, corruption and no accountability.

US to give $1b for six energy projects

ISLAMABAD – US will provide $ 16 million for the up-gradation of Pakistan’s largest hydropower project Tarbela. This was stated by the US Special Envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan, Richard Holbrooke, in his joint press conference with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi here on Wednesday.

Richard Holbrooke who is currently on a three-day official visit to Pakistan said that United States was well aware of the energy crisis confronting its trusted ally Pakistan. In order to help Pakistan in meeting its energy requirements, United States will help to upgrade Tarbela Hydropower Project on priority basis, Holbrooke said.
He said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has also been signed in this connection on Wednesday between the US and Pakistan.

Agencies add: The United States will give Pakistan $1 billion for six energy sector projects over the next four years to meet energy shortages, a US official said Wednesday. The projects include up-gradation of the Jamshoro Thermal Power Station in Sindh and Muzaffarabad Power Station in Punjab, Holbrooke said after signing an agreement for the projects.
