Power Ministry finding India’s conditions tougher than first thought

I have said against the Khulna joint power plant project not only in this thread, but also in another similar thread. The reasons are as follows:

1) This 1320 MW project is $500 million more than the price should be. It means this extra money will be shared by the AL and Congress Party cronies. BD population will have to pay this bribe money from their pockets.
2) Low quality Indian coal with high sulphur and high ash contents will be used in this plant.

Let us see what happens to this project. But, I wonder why the opposition BNP does not say a word against a project that goes against the better interest of the country. Perhaps that money-hungry BNP Madame will also get her share out of it, perhaps the bribe will be shared 70% and 30% between AL and BNP.

Then what will Congress get?

BTW BD is not going anywhere, its India that faces Balkanization from within.

Ya we know you tried but did you know how much goods you transported through this port? You can not go about without Bangladesh in regard to transit. Even Myanmar will be needing access to our deep sea port. Ohh I forgot your calcutta port and haldia port will be using this as well. Its not your choice but the choice of the shipping companies... :blah::blah::blah::blah:

Yes it is a joint venture ..so stop blaming India every time there small obstacle in the path ...whatever problems arises can be solved amicably across the table.

Stop living constant state paranoia and insecurity wrt to India.



What happens b/w Bangladesh and China is b/w Bangladesh and China..we do not care.



We have been doing it for last 62 years..surely we can manage it now
and forever..our economy hardly feel the pin prick.

It was a way of increasing trust b/w two nations by creating interdependencies ie. you were dependent on us for cheap electricity and we were dependent on you for cheap transit.

But trust is two way street
..if you don't trust us, then the effort is hardly worth it...so better end it now.

Actually I am not blaming India. In the world of negotiation there is something called "non starter or dead on arrival."

My point of bringing China in to it is very simple. Let China see if there is anything they can get out of this deal. They might also offer a realistic deal just to help to give BD an edge over India.

You are right. Trust is a two way street. So far Bangladesh is the lonely traveler on that street.

Then what will Congress get?

Congress will get 50% of the total kickback money. Of the remaining 50% AL may split it with BNP at 70% and 30%, who knows. A 1320 MW power plant shall not cost more than $1 billion, but this project is more than $1.5 billion. So, the high price tag poses a big question, isn't it?

The Joint Working Group meeting between Bangladesh and India on cooperation in power sector concluded here yesterday with two sides agreeing on a broad-based principle to cooperate with each other in the power sector.

The joint secretary-level meeting, second after the first held in Dhaka in February, reviewed the progress made on various fields in the power sector, official sources said.

The two sides also agreed to finalise the memorandum of understanding between the National Thermal Power Company (NTPC) and Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) for respective areas of cooperation by early July and the two sides are expected to sign when the Indian delegation visits Dhaka.

The MoU covering different areas of cooperation was initialled in Dhaka in February.

While reviewing the progress of feasibility study of coal-based power plant on a nomination basis, the Indian side has requested Bangladesh to finalise an agreement within two weeks for appointment of consultant.

The officials also reviewed the progress of establishment of a coal-based power plant on joint venture between NTPC and BPDB. The NTPC has sent a 'Term Sheet' for joint venture agreement and it would be finalised when MoU is signed, sources said.

In connection with the technical assessment of old power stations for efficiency, improvement and renovation and modernisation, the BPDB has already furnished the details for Ghorasal power station, official sources said.

The two sides are likely to sign the “Bulk Power Tariff Agreement” in July when an Indian delegation visits Dhaka. The Power Grid Corporation of Bangladesh and the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited earlier signed an agreement to construct electrical interconnection between Bheramara, Bangladesh and Baharampur India.

The Bangladesh side felt that preparation and finalisation of Power Purchase Agreement for purchasing 250-megawatt power from India need to be stated soon.

Mofazzel Hossain, Joint Secretary, Power Division, of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, led the Bangladesh side while Dr M Ravi Kant, Joint Secretary of Power Ministry, led the Indian team.

Manchitra khule kolkata-chitagang er distance ta ekbar dekhun.They have floated tender for a deep sea port in Sagar Island. Government is building a 3 km bridge to connect the island to the mainland. For north east and China, port in Myanmar is a good place.

deep sea port in Sagar island is nothing more than the extension of Kolkata port and will be as good as Chittagong port. But Sonadia deep sea port is a complete different ball game. It will be of the same class as Singapore port and will be the port of call for Kolkata, Chittagong, Mongla, and some western sea port of Myanmar.

Maximum draught of Sagar Island port is 12 meter after dredging and Sonadia will have draught more than 16 meter and will be used for Mother vessel 100,000 DWT and above. ;)

India has no problem of Sea ports in eastern part. Paradeep, Bishakhapatnam, Gangavaram (deepest in India) and under construction Dhamara port in Orissa. A port in Sagar helps a lot too as Kolkata port is in dying state. India only bothers about the North-East. Even if BD makes a port that rivals Singapore, it has to give good bergain to India and other countries. Do not forget China too has a deep port in Myanmar just 40 km from Sitt3e. If BD can not attract its neighbours, most possibly its port is going to be a liability to the country.

And last but not the least....Chitagang and any port nearby is volnurable to the tropical cyclones that have unnatural inclination to BD....

I think, you have missed the point Iajdani tried to make in his post. You have to understand that Singapore has a deep sea-port. Very big ocean-going ships with more than 30,000 DWT can anchor at this port. The cargoes are then sorted out and transhipped on board smaller ships of, say, 3000 ~ 5000DWT.

The smaller ships then go to ports like Haldia, Calcutta or present-day Chittagong. All these are done because big ships cannot move into these Ports. So, when BD builds a new DEEP sea-port near Cox's Bazaar, it will be able to handle big ships. In fact, this is the main reason to build a new port. As a result, many of the big ships that invariably anchor today at Singapore will anchor at the new BD Port.

The cargoes then will be re-loaded to smaller ships and coasters to carry to Haldia, Madras, a few Burmese ports, our Mangla, present-day Chittagong, and even to our Narayanganj.

When India builds its own deep sea-port in Calcutta then of course things will change. But even then, we will handle cargoes for most of our own, all of your NE, most of the Nepalese and Bhutanese, quite an amount of Burmese, and much of the Chinese cargoes. In fact, the quantity of Chinese cargoes will be more than all others combined.

By the way, I think you have misunderstood the intention of extending the port near Haldia. I think, it will be a new port, but not a deep port. It is only because Calcutta area does not have the proper depth to build a deep one. Isn't it the reason that India built Farakka dam so that a large quantity of Ganges water can be diverted to that port?

If It is true BD economy is going to boom. But for N-E Myanmar port is enough.

No, proposed Sagardeep port has a depth of sixteen metre +....it is on extreme point. Kolkata and Haldia both are dying.....depth is around 8 mt only...

The project BD is taking I think very large. But it need proper deplomacy too. to attract traffic. Else it can become a liability.
