Power crisis worsens as deficit swells to 4,000 MW
By Khalid Mustafa

ISLAMABAD: The prevailing power crisis in the country worsened on Saturday as power deficit swelled to 4,000 MW because of further reduction in water outflows from the Tarbela Dam, closure of seven thermal power units and zero supply of gas to power houses.

The Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) has increased load-shedding across the country to 6-8 hours from 4-hour outages. The hydel generation has been reduced by 2,600 MW because of reduction in outflows from the Tarbela reservoir from 55,000 cusecs to 30,000 cusecs. Earlier, outflows from Tarbela had been reduced from 100,000 cusecs to 55,000 cusecs. However, outflows from Mangla stand at 29,000 cusecs.

"We are left with no option but to go far massive load-shedding of 6-8 hours. Load-shedding for six hours would be for urban areas and eight hours for rural areas," Pepco spokesman Tahir Basharat Cheema told The News.

"A day before, the country was facing 3,000 MW power deficit and the load-shedding was for four hours for both rural and urban areas. But, under the new circumstances, the Pepco is forced to increase power outages from six to eight hours," he said.

He said seven thermal power houses had been closed for annual maintenance, which was imperative or the country would have witnessed even more power shortages in the coming winter. He said the annual maintenance of the thermal power houses was necessary, and it was due before Ramazan. But due to the governmentís instruction that no load-shedding should be passed on to consumers in Ramazan, the Pepco had initiated the process of annual maintenance of the thermal units after the holy month.

Right now, seven thermal units are closed, which includes one unit of 300 MW of the Hubco, one unit of 350 MW of the AES Lal Pir, one unit of 150 MW of the Fauji Kabirwala, two units of 340 MW (each of 170 MW) of the Muzaffargarh power house, one unit of 75 MW of the Guddu power house, one unit of 180 MW of the Jamshoro power house and 300 MW of the Chashma nuclear power plant.

The 300 MW unit of the Hubco, Cheema said, will come on stream after completion of the annual maintenance process on November 6, one unit of 350 MW of the AES Lal Pir on November 20 and one unit of 150 MW of the Fauji Kabirwala on December 17.

He said that two units of 340 MW (each of 170 MW) of the Muzaffargarh power house would start generating electricity on November 2 and 13 respectively, one unit of 75 MW of the Guddu power house in the first week of November, one unit of 180 MW of the Jamshoro power house on December 31 and 300 MW of the Chashma nuclear power plant will start generating electricity on January 18, 2009.

Because of the annual repair work at the Qadirpur gas field, he said the gas supply had been stopped to all power houses, which include 280 MW rental power houses, 170 MW GTPS and 125 MW SPS, both in Faisalabad.

Why the authorities do not take full capacity of the power generating companies, for instance; why they are taking 500MW from Bin Qasim Power plant which has capacity of 1150MW, similarly most of the power generating units produce almost 40-50% less then their full capacity. What are the intentions behind, while our industry has already booked and country's economy is facing seviour crises???

may be theres not enough resources to run them.. i am just guessing here.. but for sure, Pak electricity problem is getting worser everyday.. its gonna be real tough fight for the new govt but unfrtunately, I do not see any major steps towards solving these problems!!

Energy problems are became crucial & complex just becuz of the delebrated liniency of political and bureaucratic authurities for their own lust since decades, so how can we expect the right solution for the real critical issues including Power crises.:undecided:

In fact to solve this issue we require dedicated patriotic honest true leadership with restless curiosity and an open mind.:azn:

why the **** do you have to close all the thermal power units at the same time? This is a ******* joke.

Nationalise all power generating and distributing companies, quickly start work on the Iran gas pipeline, and submit tenders for new gas and coal power stations to be built.

Start using the extensive coal reserves pakistan has, and tell pepco to **** off.

We have relied too much on hydro power, so lets jump off the sinking ship while india is drying up our water fast.

these problems should have been solved by the previous govt, who spent all the development fund to appease Balochi secessionists, while ignoring the vast majority in the other provinces.

power projects are planned in advance, not in an ad hoc fashion on the spur of the moment. It is a disgrace that the previous govt did nothing, even though this power shortage was foreseen and predicted.

What a bunch of jokers.

This problem can easily be solved by developing the Thar coal resources. It has been many years ago that all the coal was discovered and either a federal or a Sindhi provincial task force should have been formed to start getting that coal out of the ground! The technology is available for purchase, plenty of pakistanis would die to become involved as engineers, technicians and scientists. And on top of that the price of oil was over $100 a barrel average for most of the year.

There is no legitimate excuse for inaction! Is the govt sabotaging the Pakistani economy, what is going on? :hitwall:
