Muhith says at BSEC’s National Mourning Day event

Bangladesh will be free of poverty by 2023-24, Finance Minister AMA Muhith said yesterday.

Bangladesh is on course to maintain its present growth trajectory, and if everything goes right it will become a developed nation by 2041 and fulfil Bangabandhu's dream of turning Bangladesh into Sonar Bangla (Golden Bengal), he said.

Muhith made the comments at a discussion on the National Mourning Day at the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC).

However, according to the Sustainable Development Goals, there will be no poverty after 2030, Muhith said.

Three-fifths of the national income was lost during the nine-month Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971, he said mentioning a study.

Before being assassinated on August 15, 1975, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman worked hard to give the war-torn country the right shape.

The country started falling following the brutal killing of the Father of the Nation in 1975, Muhith said.

Military rule started in the country, and it required 15 years to get out of that trap, he said.

Democracy was restored in 1990, especially during the period when the Awami League-led government was in power, he said.

In the period, Bangladesh graduated from the less developed country category to the developing one's bloc, he said.

Showing respect to the memories of Bangabandhu, the finance minister said, “I am marching forward by turning the shock of losing Bangabandhu into strength with his blessings.”

BSEC Chairman M Khairul Hossain presided over the mourning day function.

What' their definition of "free of poverty"? A bowl of rice and fish a day?
He's referring to extreme poverty. Which isn't comparable to the poverty standards seen in the US and UK. It's based on the World Bank definition of people living under the International Poverty line of less than 2 USD a day.

Rather than pass snide comments that help no one (including the poor in Pakistan), please read the following. Poverty in Pakistan also affects you personally, if you live there. @Homo Sapiens bhai.

Don't waste time and effort responding to imbeciles. Report the post and move on.

On-topic: The "End of Poverty" may not be sustainable if we do not manage upgrade the skill levels of the labour force and diversify exports.

A lot of poverty eradication depends on employment in garments industry and remittance of largely unskilled migrants in the Middle East who can get kicked out and replaced any time.

The government should work towards establishing at least one technical and one English training centre in every upazilla. If we can churn out millions of trained tradesmen (electricians, plumbers, fitters, etc.) we will receive more and more high end FDIs and export skilled, high wage migrants who are difficult to replace.

Here in Australia, there is significant demand for electricians, draftspeople, cabinet makers, fitters, etc. but you need good English to immigrate.

I wonder if Murith knows the definition of a developed country? When even China and India will remain developing countries in 2041, the Finance Minister of an LDC claims his country would be a developed one by that time frame. The GoB has not even solved the waterlogging, repair many culverts, dispose of the garbages littered throughout Dhaka, and other cities and towns, build a civilized transport system, but its politicians keep on talking about 2041 development status. What a crap!!

China will become developed country in between 2020-2030, middle developed country by 2050 and advanced developed country by 2080. Even your notion that China will continue to be a developing country in the year 2041 is simply not true. There are GDP cutoff to be considered as lower developed country. Bangladesh may or may not be able to cross that cut off by 2041 but setting the target is important.

India will also cross the lower developed per capita gdp mark in late 2030s or in 2040s.

He meant 1.90 dollar poverty line set by world Bank. This is universal absolute poverty line.Developed countries use various definition of relative poverty line which depends on their country's income level.

But I find it hilarious that, you Pakistanis try to ridicule us with Rice and Fish.Rice is the staple food for half of the global population. It is no way inferior than Chapati, red meat and daal based staple food in Pakistan. But you special dishes are mostly rice based,Biriyani, Polao etc.On the other hands, fish is a superior animal protein than red meat or poultry. If anything, you should be sorry that, due to agro-climatic factors, you can not make Rice and Fish as your staple diet.Bangladesh is fortunate in this regard.Rice and fish based staple diet are much more satisfying than any other staple diet.

when sheikh Hasina started old age allowance that was only 100 tk ( less than 2 $ that time) monthly and there was an advertisement of this allowance that with this 100 taka an older person is not only free from poverty but also eating egg and mutton regularly.
That was a dirty practical joke.
Now a days this allowance is 500 taka ( 6$) monthly, and now I have seen an advertisement that is, an expat from Denmark came to his village. He is talking about old age security in Denmark.
He is talking about old age allowance of Denmark.
Then a happy old lady of this village came here with her pension papers and said, "son, we also have pension plan in Bangladesh . In Bangladesh old peoples who are getting pension from govt are higher in number than total population of Denmark" . So the ad try to prove that in some sense Bangladesh is better than Denmark!
Now I hope you can understand that what is the "end of poverty".
He's referring to extreme poverty.
Why do you even bother to defend the person who's sanity is even not unquestionable in his own party awami league? He was not talking about extreme poverty, but he lives in his dream world always and if someone disagree with him he shouts with his famous word 'Rubbish'.

Do you forget that this old freak wanted to cut 800 tk from 1 lakh taka by declaring them as rich man ? So who has 1 lakh taka he/she is rich enough , so is the reduction of poverty same as those rich people?

Surely it is one of the biggest joke in Bangladesh.

2041? You have to consider the degree of industrialization of China?

You take a poster seriously when he is implying China and India are similar in industrisation?
China...

The world's third largest exporter of weapons.
The world's largest shipbuilding and exporting country.
The world's largest rail transit manufacturer.
The world's largest UAV production country.
The world's largest exporter of machinery.
The world's largest producer of PV products.
The largest wind power equipment manufacturer in the world.
