Portugal is looking to procure a new vehicle-mounted short-range air defence system to replace its army's ageing M48 Chaparral system.

The Portuguese Army is planning to buy a new short-range air defence system to replace its existing M48A2/A3 Chaparrals. (Victor Barreira)

A spokesperson for the service told IHS Jane's it is finalising its operational and technical requirements.

The new system is expected to be mounted on a 4x4 vehicle, and is needed as the tracked M48 Chaparral is increasingly outdated and costly to operate and maintain. The Chaparral fires a variant of the AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missile.

Although Portugal's Military Programming Law 2015-26, approved in May 2015, only provides funding to support the acquisition from 2022, studies are being carried out on hypothetically starting it earlier, the service told IHS Jane's .

Interesting to see what candidate systems will emerge.

.
We are testing a Mistral version

Also Rafael Spyder

We also will replace the Stingers, the shosen system will have two versions, infantry carried and light 4x4 vehicle multiple
mounted

. . . .
We are testing the tripod version to replace the stinger and a VBL version to replace the Chaparral, but in the end the above turret will be mounted on the new 4x4 light armoured vehicle being tested. Same people said that the MPCV was tested, the army didnt like it. The program is for 192 vehicles to replace the VBL and the HMMWV and suplement the Pandur II fleet

Also benefiting from the Mistral missile is MBDA’s highly mobile MPCV (Multi-Purpose Combat Vehicle) which deploys four, ready-to-fire Mistral missiles with four more missiles stored in the vehicle for re-loading. This automatic system has proven its outstanding capabilities during a number of test firings, most notably in June 2010 when two Mistral 2 missiles were launched against two targets approaching simultaneously from two different directions thereby demonstrating MPCV’s ability to counter a saturating attack.
Moving on from the air defence requirement and in recognition of the importance that route opening has become to military operations, particularly with the proliferation of IED’s which have now become part of everyday vocabulary, MBDA will be launching yet another new defence solution at IDEX. The countermining system, Souvim 2, which is currently being delivered to the French Army in readiness for operational deployment in Afghanistan, will be shown in conjunction with the Buffalo vehicle as an enhanced capability known as Netted Route Clearance Capability. This new system of systems, jointly developed by MBDA and Force Protection of the USA, offers a highly effective system for land forces responsible for the clearing of significant stretches of route of dangers including anti-personnel and anti-vehicle mines as well as IEDs. Souvim 2 and Buffalo work together in concert to detect, analyse, mark and neutralise the threat.
