In 1698, Angre located his first base at the Maratha fort of Vijayadurg ('Victory Fort') (formerly Gheriah) located about 425 km from Mumbai. The fort which was originally built by Maratha ruler, Shivaji is located on the coast, and has an entrance hollowed out in it to accommodate entry of a vessel from the sea.

Angre created a base on the fortified islands of "Kolaba" at Alibaug. Khanderi and Underi off the coast of Thal, Alibaug, and attempted to levy a tax on every merchant vessel entering the harbour.

Angre established a township called Alibag towards the end of the 17th century. The main village at that time, was today's Ramnath. Kanhoji even issued his own currency in the form of a silver coin called the Alibagi rupaiya.

Angre even established a base in the Andaman Islands, and is credited with attaching those islands to India.[ :woot: :yahoo:

The Goa based Chowgule group's Angre port at Jaigad near Ratnagiri is set to begin operations from April 24.

Crude oil will be the main cargo at the port and oil major HPCL has a plan to set up a refinery near the port.

The company is in talks with an oil PSU for offering bunkering service (the process of filling oil in ships) at the Fujairah price.

Set up with an investment of INR 520 crore, the port intends to serve the trucking hinterland within 350 km radius spread over Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka.
The port expects to get its cargo from Jawaharlal Nehru port which is suffering congestion.

Angre port has been named after Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre, the first important chief of the Maratha navy set by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The port has been built on build, own, operate, share and transfer basis (BOST).

The Maharashtra government has adopted the BOST policy only for investments in ports and Angre is the first project under the BOST scheme. We have signed the concession for a 50-year period with the state government after which, the project value will be assessed and shared between the company and the government," said Kulkarni.

The Maharashtra government had identified seven sites along the Konkan coast for private investment in ports. The company owns 310 acres in the back up area, while it owns another 150 acres of land within 10 km radium from the port.

I would have loved to read it as Naval base than a port. Any ways not bad step.
