PESHAWAR: Recruitment in the police force in the Malakand division has received a good response from local people and 3,000 of the 6,725 vacancies announced have been filled already.

A police source said 12,545 people applied for the vacant posts in the districts of Buner, Swat, Upper Dir, Lower Dir and Shangla.

Before the military launched Operation Rah-i-Rast against militants in the Malakand region, incidents of kidnapping and beheading of security personnel had spread scare and many policemen, even senior officials, had quit the force.

Such was the terror of the militants that several of them got their resignations published in local newspapers to escape being targeted by the militants.

There were also examples of policemen who were the sole bread earners of their families, saying goodbye to the force.

Most of the police stations and posts in Swat had been occupied by militants displaying boards of ‘Taliban Police Stations’ on the buildings.

But after the military operation the situation seems to have changed and the police service is again becoming popular among people.

‘Recruitment has started in the special police force and till July 28 over 3,000 people had been inducted in the force, who will be paid, trained and treated like other policemen,’ a police source said.

In Swat, 215 personnel were appointed in the Saidu Sharif police station, 63 in Ghaligay, 32 in Mingora, three in Khurshed Khan Shaheed (formerly Khwazakhela) police station, 53 in Rahimabad and one in the Madyan police station.

The people of Upper Dir and Shangla showed more interest in joining the police force. For 800 posts in Shangla, 3,586 applications were received and in Upper Dir, 3,200 people applied for 600 posts.

In Lower Dir, the Ouch police station got 97 recruits, Chakdara 98, Timergara 83, Samar Bagh 53, Khal 107, Lal Qila 12, Zaimdara 12, Munda 61 and the Talash police station 83.

Similarly, in Upper Dir, the Gandigar police station recruited 122 personnel, Wari 151, Dir 148, Barawal 315 and the Kalkot police station 60.

In the Shangla district, 124 personnel were appointed in the Chakesar police station, 106 in Bisham, 319 in Alpuri, 146 in Aloch and 105 in the Martoong police station, and in the Buner district, 100 in the Totalai police station, 100 in Nawagai and 185 in the Daggar police station.

A police spokesman, when contacted for comments on the current situation, told Dawn on Tuesday that the law and order situation was fast improving and policemen had reached different police stations and posts.

Referring to the recent visits of NWFP Inspector General of Police Malik Naveed Khan to different areas of the Malakand division, he said police had resumed duties in the region with a renewed pledge to sacrifice their lives for protection of people.

The appointment of local people in the police force, he said, would continue so that they further strengthened the force and helped ensure peace and tranquillity in their respective areas.

He said the IGP had awarded some special police force personnel for playing an effective role against militants in Dir.
