PN modified P-3C aircraft for land-attack missions

NEW DELHI — India's navy chief said on Monday that Pakistan's alleged modifications of US-supplied anti-ship missiles to make them capable of striking land targets showed the danger of proliferation.
The New York Times reported Saturday that US officials have complained to Pakistan about modifications of the Harpoon missiles that would make them capable of hitting land targets in neighbouring India.
"This has nothing to do with Pakistan's self-defence and it is against Indian interest," Admiral Sureesh Mehta told reporters in New Delhi.

This shows the "danger of proliferation and we have been telling this from time to time", he said.
The changes to the Harpoons, sold by the US as a defensive weapon during the Cold War in the 1980s, would be a violation of the Arms Control Export Act in the United States, the paper said.
Pakistan has denied the charge, saying it developed the missile itself.

The new weapon would be a key new entry in Pakistan?s arsenal against India, The Times said.
It would enable Pakistan's navy to strike targets on land, complementing the sizable land-based missile arsenal that Pakistan has developed.
The two nuclear-armed South Asian rivals have fought three wars since their 1947 independence from Britain.

The United States has also accused Pakistan of modifying US-made P-3C aircraft for land-attack missions, another violation of US law that the administration of President Barack Obama has protested, the report said.

whine whine whine ...

Seriously, the only time we can expect the Indian MIlitary and government to not whine and whimper about Military sales to Pakistan will be on the sale of bed linen and towels.

Though they still might whine about the towel sales since they might be worried about getting snapped by wet towels in the showers ...

Perhaps they'll feel more comfortable if Pakistan prepares for a 'pillow war'.

No 'memory foam' pillows though - they might be used for 'intelligence gathering purposes'. The ads for them say they were developed by NASA - real high tech you know.

For crying out loud India is buying some of the latest and greatest weapons on the market' why are they worried about a few modifications that PN has done?

well for the sake of the loud cries from there side, it really was pthatic,
but for me, we can really get something good out of it, i wonder if our GOV also learn to be more vocal about the indian purchases. it is there right to try to creat hurdels in our military advancements as every thing is fair in love and war.
what disapponts me more then indina trying to sabotage our military hardware procurement is that our Gov always turn a blind eye toward there purchases. it woul have been better if Pakistan could take up the mater of indina military massive buildup into the international community. why dont we tell the world that the indian arihant is not usefull to kill another Ajmal Kasab creating a mess in mumbai, nor will be the MRCA be flying against the indian extremists, i wonder why we never make the world realize that in indian aircraft carriers wont grow wheat on there decks to feed milion of there people living without food.
i understand that such cries by Pakistan wont be much entertained as al the westren countries look at india as a big market and also a barrier to be strengthened against the increasing influence of china in the region but still we must take the initiative, perhaps we may be able to convince some somewhat neutral countries to join our protest. atleast it will serve as a wake up call for Muslim states and small countries situated in neighbourhood who have always been in trouble because of indian terrorism,,,

anyhow this is my point of view and i am going to stick to it,, instead to worry about there cries we muct ourself be more vocal about there procurement and try to show people the reality!

regards!

dude...we all whine now don't we?
I remember somebody...your president maybe telling the whole world how the launch of the nuke sub is bringing an arms-race to this part of the world....
it's understandable to whine...but in this case...it's the violation of the end-user pact...and it very well is our business to whine...as these modifications would not make us proud.

In this case its actually still none of your business, but rather the US's business, and no end user violation has been confirmed.

Most reports about the issue from outside analysts suggest that modifying the old harpoons would be unfeasible, given their limitations and given that Pakistan has access to newer and better Chinese missiles.

I am ambivalent about this. I know it sounds tempting, but there is also something to be said for quiet dignity. No point sounding like a bunch of whiners.

The Pak government and military should remain aloof and continue our military response silently.

We can let the independent media do all the muckracking. That's what media does best. In India, the West, and everywhere else.

Like I said before, It was India to introduce new weapon systems in subcontinent. Nuclear Submarines are new to region and once again India is first one to introduce it. Our President actually wanred that world that if Pakistan after some years comes with a reply please don't start shouting which India and West never stop doing in context of Pakistan's defense development.

Now coming to issue of modifying US missile
Do you have any proof of this? Matter of fact is even US never delivered any proof and Pakistan has denied this allegation. Now Pakistan has all the right to develop its missiles.Land and Air Launched cruise missiles have already tested and I will never mind if PN test one for its arsenal.:pakistan:

see...you modify xyz's product...we don't care...but if you get even a lolly-pop bought from the xyz to hurt our civilians or damage anything that is remotely ours...I think it'd be prudent for us to make sure we have XYZ's attention to legally stop the modification in it's tracks.
After all...it'd be us paying a heavier price than the xyz company...

Tell me when India will stop getting new weapons? huh, my dear It was always india who introduced new weapons in sub continents be it conventional or non conventional , excluding submarines. Pakistan was forced to this made arms race.

Same goes for India, why would India? If any country is getting new equipement for enhancing its security then whats the problem, and just bcoz India is buying new hardware, is it so Pakistan has to keep on doing what India does.

Pakistan can buy what it need to secure its country, so just do it. There is no meaing in following each other. Just do whats better for the country.

If matter is between GOP and GOUS why the ur Naval Chief is so worried?

Same goes for GOP, whenever any new deal is done or new equipment is bought by India.

Arihant sure wasnt a lollypop launched to destroy the naxalites; its aimed at Pakistan.

I understand India whining about F-16's; nukes and all that; but us reverse engineering Harpoons while we have better versions of antiship missiles :woot:

Come on man India grow up :bunny:!!

News flash - hurting the opponent is what all weapon systems do, whether they are modified or not.

Complaining about the alleged modification, and it is important ealize the 'alleged' part at this point (the Naval chief is shooting his mouth off without the issue even being confirmed), is disingenuous since Pakistan reportedly has the Block II with Land Attack capability already.

What is happening, IMO, is that the Indians are on a massive media offensive to try and derail the aid package to Pakistan as well as put as many hurdles as possible in the way of any future Pakistani military acquisitions from the US.

It is whining when you compare the attitudes of the Pakistani and Indian governments and militaries respectively towards military acquisitions of the other. Very few other nations go to the sort of lengths of disinformation, lies and propaganda that the Indian Military and Government have been doing.

There is nothing wrong with the statement! but the popular media really misssed on such a rare occasion.. do you have link to it?
In my opinion if Zardari really felt the threat than he should have allocated equal amout of defense budget rather than escaping by mere statements which does not help to eliminate the threat in question.
While your naval cheif is complaining on upgrade of 20 year old maritime aircraft!
and without prooof?
As far US is concerned.. we don't need to bring any proofs of US violations of its defense agreements with Pakistan. F-16 and its spares and subsequent payments are one example.
It is natural to seek low cost upgrades for a 20 years old equipment which is obsolete any way.

Than why don't consider stop fueling arms race?
Why don't consider entering NPT?
At the end, nothing will hurt more than nukes! don't you agree?

Only reason indians are cry bez they dont want pakistan to get 7.5 Billion $ Aid.

No friend its not a case here .
The matter is what I have from my resources ,is the U214 who has 8 missile launcher tubes which also supports our CM.
Indian did alot to stop this deal but in vain,So now they convince americans to do the Job and in return they purchase their amo..

In 71 india enjoyed the better naval plate form, Instead of Pakistan. So they want again free water.
INSHALLAH this time it will be a wish.:pakistan::agree:

that is not my point....I see the whining as natural....we know that our arsenal is meant to be used against each other...hence the complaining.
