PN acquires three Fokker aircraft

By Baqir Sajjad Syed

ISLAMABAD, May 19: The Pakistan Navy (PN) has acquired three Fokker aircraft from Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) along with spares for $1.2 million. PN spokesman Capt Siddiq told this correspondent that the acquired aircraft would be cannibalised to support other Fokker aircraft in the PN’s inventory.

PN has a fleet of five Fokker F-27-200s in its 27 Maritime Squadron. Three of them were modified for special operations, while the remaining two were used for transport purposes.

Fokker aircraft, inducted in the PN fleet in 1982, share a major burden of PN’s tactical and operational missions in the Indian Ocean.

PIA had decided to ground its remaining five Fokker aircraft after the fatal Multan crash of one of these turbo-props, but insisted that the aircraft were fit to fly. The airline had then replaced them with ATR 42-500. Most of these Fokkers were manufactured in the early to mid-1960s.

The PIA management started searching for a buyer but before it could find one, another Fokker was lost while parked at the Karachi airport under another aircraft which fell over it during a storm late last year.

Left with four aircraft for sale, PIA also offered 16 Dart engines, propellers, F-27 spares, and tools and test equipment to prospective buyers. Two of the acquired aircraft had already reached the PNS Mehran, while the third would soon be shifted there.:pdf:

Yeah the Fokker is old and retired in PIA in fact the Dutch company Fokker is also gone they operate just for spares and fabrication of parts I dont know what has happened now to them. This demand is unusual form the PN.

I have highlighted the relevant parts for you guys.......

.
I have flown in them about 10 years ago on PIA. I was **** scared it would fall down any minute back then!

PN should be funded to replace them, we don't want to lose good men.

.
The Fokker is a great plane but its time has ended now. The PN is choses something that would only increase running cost, the maintance will be high as Fokker is parts are no longer available I believe from Fokker company. The Fokker performance is not the best actually I like it, but its is prone to turbulence, if the plane flys over a small cloud it starts to shake violently.

They are nice planes very safe:lol: . I remember flying in them on KLM, where did you sit infornt or back. I sat in the back it felt weird when the plane would tilt.

. . .
The Fokker's are being used for Logistics, and 2 or 3 Fokker's are fitted with Chinese equipment, which works as a make-shift recon. aircraft.
Untill the replacement takes place, PN needed the PIA Fokkers for spares, just like PAF purchased the old Mirages from Libya.

The PIA Fokker crash (Multan) was total pilot error, with conjunction of Flight safety & operations.
Allways, either the captain, or the first officer, is supposedly trained on certain emmergency maneurs, specific to the Foker's behaviour, in PIA fleet. This unfortunate flight had neither.
As usual, the aircraft was overweight, and a wet take-off was performed. On rotation, one engine quit. The aircraft was airborne, but struggling, and neither of the crew member thought about retracting the landing gear, hence increasing drag, that too on a climb with barely 200 knots on the clock.
Eventually, the aircraft stalled, hit electrical lines, then a wall, and totally fliped flopped.

.
Isn't PN replacing Fokker with P-3Cs?

.
P-3C is taking sometime, and supposedly some are to go through an upgrade. It is just an stop gap measurement. See the highlighted part of Keysersoze's post.

.
Since Fokker is out of business and limited number of spares is available we needed those ex-PIA birds to keep the current PN fleet in the air.
Eventually the Fokkers will be replaced by P-3C or possibly a totally new platform.

.
Total new platform is highly unlikely as 9 P-3Cs will easily replace the Fokker. As for the transportation (for the navy). That can be questioned.

.
If India opts for the P-8, we'll be looking for expansion and maybe a more capable platform.
Diversifying the fleet enhances the chances of survival in wartime. P-3C is an American platform, a subject to future sanctions.
Just a thought...
