SLAMABAD: As Pakistan witnessed a historic democratic transition, many in the county have started to believe that the days of military supremacy are over. But not on the roads, at least not yet.

As Nawaz Sharif, along with his family, left for the Presidency to take oath as prime minister for a record third time on Wednesday, he struck reality on the streets of Islamabad.

The question is: who is the real power wielder in Pakistan? The prime minister or the Army chief? Theoretically, the army chief is answerable to a grade-22 civil bureaucrat. Practically, he is mightier than any elected or non-elected individual in the country.

One such demonstration of this reality was witnessed Wednesday soon after Mian Nawaz Sharif’s election as Prime Minister of Pakistan.

After securing more than two-thirds majority in the National Assembly, the premier reached Punjab House to freshen up.

The prime minister was supposed to reach the Presidency before 4:00 pm to take oath from President Asif Ali Zardari.

At the oath-taking ceremony, services chiefs, political leaders, diplomats and senior civil and military officials had been invited.

PML-N sources and eyewitnesses said first to come out of Punjab House was the SUV carrying first lady Kulsoom Nawaz and her daughter Mariam Safdar. Just behind them were the vehicles of Hamza Shahbaz and Hassan Nawaz.

The convoy of the prime minister was standing at close distance from the cars of his family members. As soon as they reached the outer barrier of Punjab House adjacent to Margallah Road, an alter commando blew the whistle with full force ordering the driver to stop the vehicle.

Consequently, the prime minister’s convoy had to stop as well. The pause remained for two to three minutes.

The commando was there to make sure nothing should obstruct the route of the Army chief’s convoy, only allowing vehicles from Punjab House to pass after the entire convoy of the army chief drove away.

Whether it was a mere coincidence could not be ascertained. None of the PML-N leaders was ready to comment on the incident. But the prime minister might have shared his thoughts with his closest aides.

No need to sensationalize it. Nobody knows the specifics, the SOP's going on there and all that stuff. A commando isn't the one manning the signals, it is a MP (who isn't a commando).

And then the article also mentions that the convoy had only reached the outer perimeter of the Punjab House and wasn't even in full motion, while the COAS convoy was coming at full speed. So common sense dictates that the COAS convoy has first rights.

No need to sensationalize this, pointless.

On a side note, if anybody has experienced the COAS convoy passing through, he would be knowing the sort of emergency that ensues and it is a pandemonium! Like clockwork, MP's and soldiers descend from everywhere and cars whizzing here and there, whistling going on everywhere, sirens, lights and a sense of urgency is in the air!!!

When armed forces start ruling the nation instead of protecting then they are most incompetent in warfield.
when people give importance to armed forces over civilian beaurocrets or politicians , then , they themselves make their future uncertain.

It's a message from the army to the PM... No matter how bigger the balls become they would always remain under the dic.

I completely agree thought exactly the same. Even if it is assumed that he considers himself powerful then PM, he is not going to exercise his power at roads. I sometimes feel that new reporters do not have common sense.

In this part of the world small unnecessary thing is taken to your ego.

We have extreme confidence in our armed forces. They protect us very well and they are aware of their duty.

What happened in the past was mainly the fault of civilians. They let the army in. From those misadventures, army has learnt that it has no political role. This is appreciated by all Pakistanis no matter how weak and corrupt our civilian rulers are. Time will change and people will eventually find better leaders.

says who?lol

our armed forces actually protected and and cleaned up our country pretty well when they were in power.
and our future looked brighter then ever.

Actually, its a First come, First serve kind of thing. Army's convoy was already passing when the PMs convoy was stopped. Its not fair to stop the army generals convoy to let Nawaz sharif go first as general kiyanis convoy was already passing. It compromises the security as few security cars have passed already and the rest have to be stopped just to let PMs convoy go. Nothing to embarrass about. General Kiyani isnt a type of a man who would intentionally **** others off. Thats just a very cheap thing to do for a man of that caliber.
