PM off to London to attend opening ceremony of Olympic Games

DHAKA, July 25 (BSS) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left here this morning for London to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games 2012.

She will attend a reception to be hosted by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace on July 27 prior to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

A special flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying the Prime Minister and members of her entourage took off from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport here at 10.15 am and is expected to reach Heathrow International Airport in London at 3.30 pm (London time).

Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury, PM's Adviser HT Imam and Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif were present at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to see off the Prime Minister.

Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, chiefs of the three services and the dean of the diplomatic crops were also present.

Sheikh Hasina is leading a 38-member delegation which includes Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni, Ambassador-At-Large M Ziauddin and Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Abul Kalam Azad.

During her five-day stay in London, the Prime Minister will attend a series of meetings with the community leaders, professionals and give interviews to local and international media.

On July 25, she will attend an Iftar with the journalists from print and electronic media based in the UK at hotel St. Pancras Renaissance where she will be staying during the visit.

On July 26, Lord Ahmed of Wimbledon, also a British Conservative member of the House of Lords, will meet her.

All Party British Parliamentary Group for Bangladesh, leaders of British Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce (BBCC) and Bangladesh Caterers' Association (BCA) will also call on her.

Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to have a meeting with the First Secretary of State and Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, UK and Northern Ireland, William Hague, MP, on July 28.

Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma, Labour Party Leader Edward Miliband and eminent journalist and writer Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury will call on the Prime Minister at her hotel suite.

The Prime Minister will have meetings with All European Awami League and All European Bangabandhu Parishad.

Bangladeshi community in London will host an Iftar party in honour of the Prime Minister at Park Plaza of Westminster Hotel on July 28.

She will give interviews to British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Sunday Times and Channel 4.

Sheikh Hasina will return home on July 30 morning.
