Ottawa: India officials speaking on the sidelines of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ongoing visit to Canada have said his interactions with the leaderships of France, Germany and Canada have been substantial and rewarding in many ways, and most definitely taken bilateral relations with all three nations forward.

In a background interaction, one of these officials told ANI that in each of the three countries that the Prime Minister had visited during his nine-day visit, he had achieved significant outcomes.

For example, he said that if in France, it was the off-the-shelf purchase of 36 Rafale multi-combat fighter aircraft, in Germany, it was a full-blown promotion of the Prime Minister's and his NDA Government's Make in India initiative. Now, in Canada, a bilateral agreement had been reached to engage in nuclear (uranium) commerce worth millions of dollars, which would achieve the twin objective of meeting the energy requirements of India's reactors, and also provide much needed employment to people in both countries.

It may be recalled that in France on April 10, Prime Minister Modi had announced that he had requested French President Francois Hollande for 36 Rafale jets in fly-away condition as quickly as possible.

The Rafale had been chosen as the Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) for the IAF after a stringent technical evaluation and global tender process which lasted a decade.

That bold call by Prime Minister Modi resulted in collective sighs of relief not only for the French employees of Dassault, which manufactures the aircraft, but also for the Indian Air Force, which has repeatedly expressed its concern over the steady haemorrhaging of the Indian air fleet.

Experts maintained that the acquisition of these aircraft couldn't have been more pressing in nature.

The Ministry of External Affairs has said that the understanding between India and France over the purchase of these 36 Rafale fighter jets will soon be translated into a government-to-government agreement. It has further stated that time is required for the nitty-gritty to be worked out, and once this objective is achieved by the technical people, the information will be revealed in the public domain.

In Germany, the Prime Minister's Make in India initiative was given signature status in a manner of speaking. The Indian Government having announced it in the middle of last year, used the Prime Minister's visit to Germany to emphatically project the desire for a mutually beneficial trade and commercial partnership between New Delhi and Berlin to ensure the growth and prosperity of both.

It was emphasized during the visit to Hannover and Berlin that India's priorities 'fit well' with Germany's expertise, and that the Make in India initiative was another new way to enhance existing yet unrealized potential.

The invitation to the German business and investment class to come and make in India was projected as very possible and desirable.

The Prime Minister, during his visit to Germany, also mentioned that Germany could play a major role in easing the great challenges faced by the growing urbanization in India, and said that New Delhi's focus was on the development of "Smart Cities" to provide basic necessities such as affordable housing, clean water and a safe environment for Indian citizens.

In Hannover, he said, "Generating jobs for India's youthful population is a key to harnessing India's demographic advantage. This can be achieved only when we significantly and quickly ramp up our manufacturing capabilities. To meet this objective my government has unveiled the 'Make in India' initiative. This is a win-win for all."

The signing of the uranium supply deal worth millions of dollars via Canadian producer Cameco Corporation today is being seen as the launch of a new level of bilateral cooperation between India and Canada on the basis of trust and not give and take.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was particular in emphasizing that his government's focus on clean energy commerce though expensive, would be for the betterment of the human race in the long run.

"For me, uranium is about trust and a step towards saving the world from global warming," he said on Wednesday.

He also used the occasion of his formal meeting with Prime minister Harper to restate that the Indian economy is growing at a fast pace and soon become a key manufacturing hub of the world. Today's landmark agreement is indicative of the fact that Canada has the potential to be a key partner in every area of India's national development priority.
