PANAJI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday warned of "tough decisions" over the next couple of years to improve the country's financial health, which he said may not go down well with some sections, and attacked the way the previous UPA government had handled the economy.

"Taking tough decisions and strong measures in the coming one or two years are needed to bring financial discipline which will restore and boost the country's self-confidence," he said addressing BJP workers here.

This is the first occasion in less than three weeks since taking over reins of power that Modi has made sharply critical comments on the previous Manmohan Singh government's peformance.

"I have taken over the reins of the country in circumstances when there is nothing left behind by the previous government. They left everything empty. The country's financial health has hit the bottom," Modi said.

"However, in the short run, such measures may not go down well with everybody," he added.

"I am well aware that my steps may dent the immense love that the country has given to me. But when my countrymen would realize that these steps would result in getting the financial health back, then I will regain that love," said the Prime Minister.

On the other hand, if these tough measures were not taken, the financial situation would not improve, he said, adding "we need to take action wherever required."

"We won't be helping the country by praising Modi and praising BJP. There is no guarantee that just singing praise of Modi would improve the situation. We need to take harsh measures to improve the financial situation," he said.

Shortly later, Modi tweeted that "time has come to take tough decisions in the interest of the nation. Whatever decisions we take will be solely guided by national interest".

Its ok Mr. PM, do whatever is necessary for the greater good. We will stand with you.

Is he hinting at repealing most of the socialist policies and populist schemes started by Congress??? I doubt even he has enough guts to do that as political consequences of such move can be disastrous in a country where people have become too used to getting freebies but still despite of that if he does it then my respect for this man will increase thousand fold. A guy who thinks and works for the welfare of his country and his countrymen first without giving a hoot about his political future. Even as consequence of such move results in Modi loosing next general election then sorry to say but India deserves to be and infact will be the third world poverty stricken country for a long time.

it is all about communication, he needs to carry the masses along with him. if people believe in him, if they believe the tough decisions will be ultimately for the benefit of the nation, they will march shoulder-to-shoulder with GOI.

as always, any new govt. needs to take the tough decisions early on. hopefully by the time elections roll around, the people are able to see the results.

If he can take the tough decisions regarding economic reform and cut down on useless schemes then it will help out the economy a lot.

Tough decisions can be unpopular, meaning that it can upset your vote-bank. Will Mr.Modi take this step, time will tell.

so modi gonna implement MMS's policies..like decontrol petrol, diesel, gas prices...impose as many taxes as possible!!! shame shame shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....I was expecting some words on industrialiation and eradication of poverty!!!!!!!!!!

Finally a PM motivated by pride and nationalism not greed and corruption. UPA f-ked India and they made off like thieves. I hope the gov't jumps on Vadra and all those other crooks. I also want them to open and resolve the files on Netaji asap. That itself will nail Congress to the coffin.
