PM Imran Khan Speech at Groundbreaking Ceremony of Naya Pakistan Housing Scheme in Renala Khurd

. .
You know this could be along with education the signature projects of PM IK. They will be measure of success of this government. No city in Pakistan should have slums. In fact that is what makes Pakistan take the look of a underdeveloped country. In Europe all those who would in the past be living in slums now live in flats or housing in council estates. This seems to be inspired by the post world war projects in Europe. And before anybody complains this is infintely better then a slum with no sanitation, gas or electrcity etc.

Housing Sector will prop up 40 more industries including steel, cement, glass, sanitary, tiles and dozen more...50 lacs homes per year is difficult but doable. And as PM IK has said it is a difficult task and the reason for taking this as a challenge.

No city in Pakistan should have slums. In fact that is what makes Pakistan take the look of a underdeveloped country.

Absolutely right!!

No city should have slums and no city should have extravagant lavish, huge and hideous bungalows as well, Bungalow culture and slums co exist here.

.
ik govt has failed to complete any construction project in time such as metro bus of kpk so there is high probability that this project will face delays and high level of corruption when most of his cabinet is constituted by zardari govt ministers so this may turn in new ashiana housing scheme

MashAllah. May Allah protect this great man.

It is a master vision without a doubt. You have the same thing in the US. Slums should be a thing of the past.

Not only should the government build these flats, but there should also be proper after care. Any issues with plumbing, sewerage etc. should be sorted out by housing companies etc.

What really delights me is massive Chinese help in this regard. Chinese tech will enable quick and effective building of these houses for the poor.

Singapore also has this govt. build apts and condos...Public housing in Singapore is managed by the Housing and Development Board (HDB) under temporary leaseholds for 99 years only.

Oversight is very important. Since this is a very important project for the current government one would expect IK to overlook and guide wherever needed.

The major differance I have observed between Islamabad-Rawalpindi and the city I live in UK is not that the former has no posh areas. No, both have high end areas with nice housing, open green aspect. The differance is in UK the bottome 25% live in council estates which are owned and provided by the state. These were built not to make profit but to house the poor who otherwise would end up living in huge slums. Whilst council estates are not nice but certainly they are still better then the slums you see in Islamabad/Rawalpindi.

And as you pointed out they will help 40 other industries. To build housing you don't need to buy US F-16 fighter technology. There is no excuse why Pakistan has slums. We have labour aplenty., We have land. We have cement. We have spades. Get on with it ~ I know I am making it rather simple to make a point.

In UK every city, large or small will have huge council estates to house the disadvantaged. Otherwise they would be also living in huge slums, living under metal cardboards, shitting and pissing outside. Being white does not make them differant.

Well said bro. Well said. Amen to all of this.

Home being the basic need, this program hopefully will get a head start. Yes we have labor, land everything...has more to do with class segregation, which shouldn't be any if you talk about Medina ki Riasat and inclusiveness, pluralism and equality.

Slums can be converted into mid rises gradually, here private sector is getting involved in housing according to IK speech and there are chances of corruption and getting things done as well...corruption at times can be good.

Government here is shying away from taking the plunge in housing sector and facilitating it unlike in UK.

On my first visit to Pakistan decades ago what struck me and actually shocked me was the condition of the poor. Living outside, begging and living in wretched conditions. I lived in with my maternal uncle in Islamabad's G block and it appeared nice, tidy and sort of middle class area like in UK. But the shock was when I visited Rawalpindi and some of the slums there. Also not too far from my uncles house there was this park and a nala ran through it. Next to it a small slum had taken root. Half naked kids and smell from the refuse was disgusting ~ they were Christian menial workers who provided maids, cleaners to the G-block residents. I reemeber like yesterday cycling past their slum and thinking how unfortunate they were. In UK that category would be living in a council estate.

The funny thing is in UK the country is far wealthy since that time [decades ago] but the welfare state has shrunk] and now we are seeing beggers, homeless people everyday. I often see them standing at traffic lights, huddled under bridges and all are white. This shows we are all human. If a society does not take care of it's poor and weak the result is same.

The day Pakistan takes care of it's poor, weak and sick it will be a beautiful country and actually better then Europe as we already have better family values etc. So let us all support and pray that housing, education and health succeed under PM IK.

A note on corruption. No society is free from corruption. The amount I have observed in UK is enormous. I am aware that in any huge project by the state in UK there is always corruption. Indeed I am sure when they built United Kingdoms road and housing after World War 2 there was corruption. It can't be avoided. But we should not and cannot accept corruption in the top tiers of the state. If the PM is corrupt then it is hell let loose.

Great words!!! and great thinking...

Hope there comes a day when we can see all this...hope springs eternal.

Haven't watched the video as I am in office, Can somebody please summarize

1. Timelines and size of "Renal Khurd" project of overall scheme? Any map made public?
2. Number or Houses / Apartments, expected prices, installment plan
3. Execution Modal - What is the role of government? Is it doing facilitation role only or involve in developement?
4. How it will be ensured that private partners will not build substandard multi-story buildings waiting for disaster
