“I’ve decided to form two new divisions after two rivers- one would be named after Padma and another after Meghna,” she said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday said she wants to upgrade Faridpur and Cumilla as two new divisions after the names of two major rivers – Padma and Meghna.

"I've decided to form two new divisions after two rivers- one would be named after Padma and another after Meghna," she said.

The Prime Minister revealed it while opening the newly-constructed office Bhaban for Awami League's Cumilla City unit virtually from her official residence Ganobhaban.

She said if the division is formed after the name of Cumilla other districts might not be interested to join it.

The PM said she will form Faridpur Division after the name of Padma, another famous river of the country.

LGRD Minister Tazul Islam, AL organising secretary Abu Sayeed Al Mahmood Swapon and local Awami League MP AKM Bahauddin and other local AL leaders joined the virtual the function from the new office building.

Bangabandhu-1 and Bangabandhu-2 would be more liked by the people. But Comilla and Faridpur are old names. Why does she think people will not accept any of these names?

Dictatorship as usual!!

Politicking as usual.

Cumilla division chahiye!

Noakhali-tey Int'l airport chai !

Ghorar Anda chai!

Uneducated Ganda-Murkh these AL goonda idiots.

Ya but what purpose does it achieve, apart from an obvious BCS exam question about the names of two new districts?
DGFI/NSI probably engineered the split of Sudan just to create more BCS questions.

On topic: there is not much benefit in creating new divisions if we do not decentralise governance.

can you define your pet project called, Decentralizxation to us?

Do you want all the ministries go to different District Towns? Like Foreign Ministry goes to Rajshahi, Finance Ministry goes to Sylhet and so on-------. Is it your decentralization?

Please teach us.

I believe he is talking about federal and provincial government. Federal government will deal with national issues and provincial government will deal with local and regional issue.

@Black_cats is correct. While defence, foreign affairs, etc will need to remain at a federal/national level, things like management of basic infrastructure (roads, bridges, drainage, etc.), governance of transport systems, local law enforcement, food inspections, etc. should be managed at a local level (provincial govt level). We can start by appointing governors to form provincial govts and then transition to having elections.

You did not say about the taxation system. Will the national or Provincial govt collect tax?

How about its disbursement/ allotment throughout the country or in the said Provinces?

So, how many Provinces would you propose and cite also their names and respective territories?

Tax system would have to be split up. Provincial govt could collect VAT while federal govt could retain income tax, corporate tax, etc..

We can simply convert the 8 division into provinces. Now people could ask: why turn such geopolitically small landasses into provinces? I believe this is justified because although geographically small, each of the provinces would host tens of millions of people which is more than most independent countries. We can retain the same names.

Well since comilla is কুমিল্লা, so I propose সুমিল্লা ( sumilla )division.

As per Hasina's excuse it's home of Mushtak and also she doesn't want co/ku/কু

But Faridpur should be Bangabandhu division not Padma!

Ps: Kushtia should be renamed as sushtia, kumarkhali to sumarkhali, kuthibari of tagore must be pronounced as suthibari!

কুয়াকাটা থেকে সুয়াকাটা, কুয়াশা থেকে সুয়াশা!

Many other places starts with ku should be change to su. ( কু থেকে সু)
