A synopsis of what it says is as follows :-
1) Premier Nawaz Sharief has deffered his planned US visit as Pakistan seeks clarification from US on some critical issues.
2) The US of A again needs Pakistan in Afghanistan since Obama has announced that US troops will stay for one more year in Afghanistan.
3) Obama administration is facing increasing criticism at home for its failure in Afghanistan.Since it is election season in US,Obama wants Pakistani support in Afghanistan so that fortunes of his party in the presedential elections don't nose dive due to failure in Afghanistan.
4) DG ISI is in US already for talks,Sartaj Aziz and then Nawaz Sharief and later COAS Raheel Sharief will also make a visit to US.
5) Should ask US to curb Indian Activities in Afghanistan.

i understand these talk are about a Little MORE thn it seem on the face Value ...

Two things come to my mind ... With Failing to get any Foreign Policy Success Points for Next Election ... Obama needs to find atleast some face saving by making Pakistan agree to some of its concerns (either by pressurizing or offering a Deal), while Pakistan reading between the lines .. is not going to bow (not so easily)

Second ... why meet Obama Administration NOW .. he have 12-14 months left in the presidency & regardless of how crazy Republican Candidates are .. Democrats really won't be able to win next election ... or atleast Obama himself is not gonna be in office after an year ...

He have already called it a day (IMO) , he is gonna leave relation with India on High (atleast on the surface) but already have hanged his boots for Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine .... Now things would re-start after an year with New Administration.

Pakistan need to take SPECIAL care of what he talks or agrees into the upcoming meeting!!!

He's actually a master of it. He's dealt with the utmost pressure and force in 1998. If you see his current performance with CPEC / Chinese Investments, Bonds to collect revenue and creating attractions around investing in Pakistan in the US and elsewhere, Nasdaq entry of the Pakistani stock market, GSP Plus, Russian investments and trade, to name a few, are ALL huge accomplishments.

I hope this opportunity would result in providing Pakistan with immediate transfer of Block 40 -16's MLU's with lower flying miles at the least to fulfill some numbers in the PAF. And investment guarantees to Pakistan this year before POTUS goes, and some future business guarantees to allow Pakistan preferred status to the US market, or in manufacturing some parts for the American defense industry to help Pakistan further establish her economy.

The US and Pakistan will always have a good relationship as long as a Democratically Elected PM with business and negotiation skill goes to Washington. The US can help Pakistan in turning around her economy and Pakistan can help the US in Afghanistan and against ISIS. Both can work as partners and reap benefits. Everyone wins

Here you totally underestimate the power of the most powerful man on the planet, the President of the United States of America !!!! Pakistan is on a growth path. Not a super power. So she should build relationships. ONE executive order can provide Pakistan with 50 or 100 -16's block 40's if they are sitting in excess defense article bases, plenty of investments and all. So I hope there can be good negotiations and Pakistan can secure certain economic benefits from the US.

Plus, if Pakistan and the US work together, Dems will sit down with Republicans and a smoother friendlier relationship will come into being as this isn't a dictator talking, this is a PM elected democratically and went through hell to prove his power to his opponents, still made serious strides in improving Pakistan's economy and stability and is supported by the Army. How many of these civilians do you know coming from Pakistan?

Its the first one!!!! And people in Washington know it too and have respect for him. Good luck to US and Pakistan in getting to agreements that mutually benefit both nations

50-100 F-16 would be way too much of a favour, even if taken on commercial terms, with India & US in honeymoon phase, i don't see it happening, infact if we don't take into account india , Pak & US are not on that High on terms (not the lowest Either) but still not in the best of our relationships !

If anything US could have released Pakistan Navy formal of six US Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates but only ONE is recived so far (& would remain the ONLY One). The United States Congress has placed "impossible" conditions on the transfer of further ships.

I would be Amazed even if remaining Previously Embargoed 12-14 USN F-16 could be issued let alone the Option of a Squadron or Two we have in hand from the last order !

The -16's won't be free, there will be a minimal cost Pakistan will pay. But the punch and the capability vs. price would be unmatched. If a real partnership is in making, 30 or 50 0r 100, it doesn't make a difference to the US. As long as the planes can be allocated for delivery.


I am sure through negotiations, everyone can leave the table happy. NS is good with negotiations.

DG ISI meets US intelligence officials ahead of Nawaz's Washington trip

Director-General (DG) Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lieutenant General Rizwan Akhtar, during his visit to Washington, has held meetings with top US intelligence officials discussing strategic issues and counter-terrorism.
The DG ISI, upon his return Sunday evening, will present a report to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and brief the premier regarding details of his discussions with US officials. Nawaz is expected to depart for the US following the briefing.
PM Nawaz, who was scheduled to leave for London Sunday en-route Washington on his second state visit to the USA, has delayed his visit by a day, well-placed sources told DawnNews.

Adviser to the Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz and Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhary left for Washington early on Sunday ahead of Nawaz in order to hold preparatory meetings with senior US officials.
Speaking to BBC Urdu on Saturday, Sartaj Aziz said the purpose of Nawaz Sharif's visit to Washington is discussion of nuclear safety, not compromising on the extent of Pakistan's defence capabilities.
"Our main priority is to protect national interest and security, and we will not compromise on this," he said.
The National Security Advisor's statement follows international media reports which claim the US is ready to help Pakistan join the Nuclear Suppliers Group if it accepts certain restrictions on its nuclear programme.
The White House later said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and US President Barack Obama are not going to sign a nuclear deal next week but they will discuss the nuclear issue in their meeting.
Aziz said core issues to be discussed during the upcoming talks with the US include Pak-India relations, restoration of peace in Afghanistan and trade and investment opportunities.

Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi has expressed hope that Nawaz's upcoming visit will strengthen bilateral ties with the US, Radio Pakistan reported.

Fatemi also said that Pakistan's nuclear programme is purely for peaceful purposes.

Pakistan has been asking the United States for a civilian nuclear deal since 2008 and has also been building its case for admission into the NSG.
In this regard, Pakistan lately updated its export control list for sensitive technologies and goods to make it compatible with international regimes.
The move was praised by the US. But the strings attached to President Obama’s offer are unlikely to be acceptable to Pakistan.
Besides the discussion on the US proposal for Pakistan’s nuclear mainstreaming, Mr Sharif would be telling President Obama about what Pakistan is doing to help restart the reconciliation process that stalled after disclosure about Mullah Omar’s death, and also about what his government was doing to fight terrorism at home.
“Next week, I will host Prime Minister Sharif of Pakistan, and I will continue to urge all parties in the region to press the Taliban to return to peace talks and to do their part in pursuit of the peace that Afghans deserve,” President Obama said on Thursday.

I am sorry for assuming. I should've asked, or read the profile...

The meeting minutes won't come out, besides a few important things as the two premiers are going to discuss very sensitive issues like Syria, Russia, ISIS and all. But any beneficial agreements that POTUS will make for Pakistan's economy, etc, will obviously come out.

Has ANYONE in the entire history of Pakistan seen the US President mentioning with enthusiasm weeks before the visit that "he'll be hosting NS in Washington during his visit in October for mutual concerns like bringing Taliban to discussions and all"? In less than three years in the office, the current government took Pakistan from a "client state" to a sovereign, to be regional power's perception. That's huge. The US now looks at Pakistan as a powerful and influential country on the world map. Up till 2012, it used to be considered a liability!!!! So great work there.

Has ANYONE seen a Pakistani PM cancel / reschedule his trip to the US at the last minute, to make sure he's prepared for the meeting and that he needs a "clarified" list of agenda from the US???? NOPE!!! This is the first time. And it tells you that the level of what Pakistan was, and what she has become today, is a LOT different. This is great for Pakistan, her nation and the future. A very respectful mutually beneficial relationship is about to be formed and it'll help the Pakistan and the US in achieving heir goals together.
