Mateen Haider
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday was heading a high level meeting to discuss matters pertaining to national and regional security.

The meeting was attended by Adviser to Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, Chief of General Staff Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed and Director General military operations Major Gen Amir Riaz.

Sources told Dawn.com that the COAS briefed the meeting regarding his talks with the Nato and International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) commanders, and Afghan leadership in Kabul yesterday.

Sources added that the meeting was to review the security situation along the Pak-Afghan border and to ponder over the future strategy after the possible withdrawal of Nato forces from Afghanistan.

The prime minister during the meeting said that national security was of paramount importance for the country.

It was expected that the meeting would give approval for air strikes against more terrorist sanctuaries in tribal areas.

It is simply our wish and desire to see a safe and secure Pakistan. Our nations have made a lot of our sacrifices in our shared quest for peace, but it is simply not possible to have a stable region without a stable Pakistan. The bottom line is that we cannot over emphasize Pakistan’s importance in the region. The need of the hour is to remain united against those who are working against our shared peace objectives in the region. The recent visits by US Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Jonathan Greenert and Commander of the U.S. Central Command, General Lloyd J. Austin, prove our officials are working closely for the betterment of the region.

The leading candidates from Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and Abdullah Abdullah have also voiced their desire to form a healthy working relationship with Pakistan. We have every reason to be optimistic in regards to achieving our common objectives in the region. We strongly commend the efforts of the Pakistani authorities in countering extremism. We have full confidence in Pakistani government’s ability to restore peace in the country.
