I believe the sub is Type 035 Ming Class, a Chinese design based on Romeo class, both types are hard to differentiate in appearance but the conning towers are slightly different, telling signs are the front base of the conning tower and the arrangement of windows on the conning tower.

According to Sinodefence 12 Ming class are serving in PLAN North Sea fleet.

a sub is the most extreme functioning combat environment...nerves are tested.

I don't think that is a good move for now. Subs are isolated from outside for long periods, especially nuclear powered ones. Potential for abuse of authority is an issue.
