Terrorists from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) attacked a bus of workers constructing a military outpost in eastern Hakkari province near the border with Iraq, killing one and wounding four others on Saturday.
Hakkari Vice Governor Önder Bozkurt said the attack occurred near the village of Yeşilova early in the day. The injured were immediately taken by military helicopters to a nearby hospital. The workers were reportedly on their way to the construction site in a remote area near Yeşilova when their bus came under fire by terrorists. One worker was reported dead at the site of the attack.
One of the injured workers, Bahattin Aşğa, told reporters that they had been threatened by PKK terrorists not to work on the construction of the outpost before the attack. One of our friends received a phone call a few days ago. They [the terrorists] said they knew who we were and what we were working on. They told us to find other jobs. In response, our friend said we were working for money and had no other purpose. We informed security forces about the phone call, and they said they would wiretap our phone conversations for security measures, he said.
Aşğa said the terrorists used rifles in the attack.
The driver of the bus carrying the workers, Burhan Bicil, also said the PKK threatened them before the assault. The organization [PKK] threatened us by phone, but no security measure was taken [to protect us]. The military is around one kilometer away [from the construction site], and the PKK killed our friend. We could have lost our lives in the attack, too, he asserted.
In the meantime, Turkish security forces killed one terrorist in a military operation in Uludere, a district of Şırnak province, on Saturday. A statement released by the Şırnak Governor's Office said a clash erupted between Turkish security forces and a group of PKK terrorists who were reportedly preparing to attack border units in Uludere. An operation is still under way in the area, according to the statement.
