What's new

Pixel by pixel, Taiwan maps out claims to contested South China Sea

No. They were a threat to the mainland up to the 70's, because they had a formidable navy and CSK openly professed to wanting to launch an amphibious operation. But now our navy has far surpassed theirs. Also, we didn't kill any of their fishermen, so I'm not sure where the casus belli would come from.

One possible scenario would involve a government in Taiwan that is pro-independence.

Though I doubt it would result in a shooting war but it would have some consequences.

I am aware that PH Navy is weak but that Bataan war crime is something that can be seen as a sore point about the PH-Japan relations. Anyways, if Taiwan decided to turn deaf to US and attack us, won't that mean something to the Mainland which could see Taiwan as a threat as it would show they (Taiwanese government) are willing to use force against anyone that threatens them and their people?

Taiwan relies on US for its security, so under any administration KMT or DPP, it would not turn a deft ear to the US. But even if Taiwan attack Philippine, it would not pose a security threat to that of China as the fundamental power equation in the region would not change.

Taiwan would never go beyond the requests of its de facto master, the US. So, consider this mapping as a gesture of technological capability.

But still, it is good news since Taiwan's claims sort of reinforces those of China. With this, there goes the rumors about Taiwan-Japan or Taiwan-Vietnam collaboration against China.

My friend, as a learned researcher i'm sure you know that just because some policies are not listed publicly, doesn't necessarily mean it isn't there.

I know that as a field, international relations is the one that is most open to speculation. Very few know who is doing what whom behind the doors. What academicians can do is in fact to voice their best learned guesses although some established ones can have more access than the newbies.
