Somali pirates hijack cargo vessel near India

NAIROBI, Kenya -- Pirates have captured a cargo vessel about 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers east of Somalia, the European Union's anti-piracy force said Sunday.

The EU Naval Force said the attack took place only 550 miles (880 kilometers) from the coast of India.

Pirates launched the Saturday attack from two skiffs that were supported by a mother ship. The pirates fired small arms and rocket-propelled grenades at the MV Renuar, a Panama-flagged, Liberian-owned cargo vessel. The EU Naval Force said the condition of the 24 Filipino crew members is not known.

Somali pirates are extending the range of their attacks to avoid encounters with the EU Naval Force patrolling shipping lanes nearer Somalia's coast.

The EU Naval Force said on Friday pirates hijacked a U.S.-operated ship just east of the Tanzania-Mozambique border, making it one of the most southerly attacks Somali pirates have pulled off.

All 23 crew members on the MV Panama were from Myanmar. The EU Naval Force had no information about their condition.

In Dhaka, Bangladesh, the owner of a Bangladesh-flagged ship hijacked a week ago by pirates said Sunday that all 25 crew members and the wife of a sailor were safe.

Shipping company owner Mohammad Shahjahan said the hijacked M.V. Jahan Moni was anchored off the Somali coast. Shahjahan said he spoke to two crewmen and the sailor's wife twice by telephone on Sunday.

All the Bangladeshis were confined in the wheel room on the top of the ship, "but they are safe," Shahjahan told reporters. He said the pirates had not yet made a ransom demand for the release of the ship and those aboard.

The Bangladeshi ship carrying nickel ore was hijacked in the Arabian Sea off the Indian coast as it was heading from Singapore to Greece. It had loaded its cargo in Indonesia.

Somali pirates currently hold more than 500 crew members from more than 20 ships. Hostages and ships have been held for months and released only for multimillion-dollar ransoms.

Somalia has been mired in anarchy since 1991, enabling piracy to thrive off its Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden coasts. A multinational force patrols the seas, but the vast distances and pirates' ability to attack farther offshore mean hijackings have continued.

India didn't even know something happened near her coastline....
Indian defense.....LOL

For Your Kind Information , 880 Kms from Lakshadweep or Andamans are not our Coastlines.... Understand.... And Indian Navy has won the International Maritime Agency award for Foiling most number of Piracy attempts and Escorting around 700 Vessels... And Neither Does any Vessel come inside Indian waters Without proper maritime code, How can Navy patrol International waters Unless otherwise asked to??

Where in the article does it say "Pirates hijacked a vessel near India without India knowing"... or did you just decide to be a reporter one fine day?

Do you know how far from mainland do international waters start? 14 miles

Do you know how far the ship was from India? 500 Miles.

Do you know why distance from India is mentioned? Because India is a relevant country in the region unlike yours.

It says from the coast of India not in Indian maritime borders..thats one hell of a distance..its a common practice in press to tell distances in the sea by nearest coast line...nothing here to criticize India. We need to enforce some quality control on PDF.

Better question is why didn't any navy stop them from going back? I mean, don't ships have to go to some kind of control center like airplanes? When they begin to speed through the water, wouldn't some navy eventually stop them?

I see double standard here :

When India failed to detect an incident that happened near her country , Indians here claim that it happened "far away" from India but when Chinese ships pass through the Indian Ocean far away from the Indian Mainland then Indians claim that China has ventured into "Indian Territory".

When did we say that??? Any Vessel Coming without proper Maritime code would be held... We cannot go and Catch the vessel from International Waters Unless otherwise we are told to By the IMA or If the Vessel Contacts us of a Pirate attack, both dint happen, so how are we held Responsible??

The fact that Chinese ships moved into the area without anyone knowing shows that the Indian Ocean is very hard to patrol.
